In it, the ancient nymph Callistô, whose ancient tomb stands in the Louvre, awakens to nocturnal life in modern Paris and discovers new sensual pleasures with the narrator. The story contrasts the supposed decadence of modernity with the ancient world, with Callistô criticizing modern culture as imitative and uninspired - "nothing new under the sun" - amid erotic adventures. The work combines Louys' typical themes of sensuality, antiquity, and satire in a limited, illustrated edition.
