Buntpapiere
Literature of 17th to 19th Century – Colored Paper. - Brocade paper featuring intertwined scrolls of varying sizes and densities, complemented by acanthus motifs and grotesques (fish bodies and snakes). Mid-18th century. Gold embossing on carmine-red paper. Each 29.6 x 19.7 cm (book cover). Contents: Il secolo Vendicato, To Her Royal Highness Maria Antonia Valburga of Bavaria, Cesema. Biasini, (1773). - Hot foil relief embossing using the copperplate printing process. Probably Augsburg, between 1730 and 1780. See Raccolta Bertarelli, Carte Decorate, 1117 for the design (basic pattern for Stoy). - This sheet features a large-format, positively embossed brocade paper in gold metallic foil on an orange-red background. The scrollwork is rendered in a bold, high-Baroque style: lush acanthus scrolls with flowers, fruits, and leaf volutes spread across the entire surface of the sheet without being arranged symmetrically-a characteristic of early Augsburg production before the pattern became rigid during the Rococo phase around 1740. Embedded in the foliage are characteristic mythical creatures, including a serpentine chimera with a scaly fish body-a classic grotesque motif that traces back to the Augsburg copperplate engraving tradition and the ornamental engraving models of early German Baroque ornamentation. The execution of the animal motif as an inserted individual element within the base scrollwork panel suggests the use of the puzzle technique documented for Mieser and Stoy, in which interchangeable figure inserts are placed within a recurring scrollwork pattern. - At the margin minimally rubbed.
