Ebert 14387 - Brunet III, 1901 - Graesse IV, 606 - Zischka 7 - Hauptteil in zweiter, Supplemente in erster Auflage der Basler Ausgabe. - "Bedeutendes und sehr erfolgreiches Werk, Vorläufer der späteren französischen Enzyklopädien. Enthält viel wertvolles Material." - Erstmals 1674 erschienen "steht das Buch am Beginn einer neuen Entwicklung (der Lexikographie). Neben dem klassischen Bildungsstoff brachte das Werk viele Aktualitäten, dabei über die im Titel gesteckten Grenzen eines historischen Lexikons hinausgehend. Die sich immer wieder ablösenden Auflagen stellten so etwas wie ein Jahrbuch der gebildeten Welt dar. Neue Forschungsergebnisse wurden unverzüglich in die neue Auflage eingearbeitet. Die Belange der katholischen Geistlichkeit, Biographien von Kirchenmännern und Kirchengeschichte waren eine besonders starke Seite des Werkes" (Zischka 7). - Kleiner Stempel auf Titeln (Schloss Bächingen, möglicherweise aus dem Besitz von Franziska von Hohenheim), gelegentlich wenig feuchtigkeitsrandig, ohne das Frontispiz in Bd. 1, insgesamt sauberes, dekoratives Exemplar.
