Derzeit für uns im Handel nicht, auf Auktionen in den 20 Jahren nur in drei weiteren Exemplaren nachweisbar. - Im ersten Band behandelt Eck die von Petrus Hispanus, dem großen portugiesischen Logiker des 13. Jahrhunderts, Arzt und späteren Papst Johannes XXI. verfassten "Summulae logicales", zwölf um 1240 entstandene Traktate. Sie stellen die populärste mittelalterliche Einführung in die Logik dar, mit einer langen und fein ausdifferenzierten Wirkungsgeschichte. - Der Text ist sehr reich illustriert und durch den zweispaltigen Druck von großer Klarheit und Übersichtlichkeit. Ecks erklärende und vermittelnde Kommentare sind dabei von außergewöhnlichem Wissen und beispielhaftem Abstraktionsvermögen gekennzeichnet. - Das gleiche gilt für seine angebundene, kommentierte Ausgabe der Aristotelischen Logik, in der Eck seine Scharfsinnigkeit, sein beachtliches rhetorisches Talent und seine "Disputierfreude" beweist. "Die darin enthaltene Codierung der aristotelischen Syllogistik wird noch heute gebraucht." (Prantl) - Der Aristoteles-Band mit zahlreichen Marginalien von alter Hand. - Provenienz: Abraham Ebensperger, mit dessen hs. Besitzereintrag von alter Hand auf dem Titelblatt des Petrus Hispanus. - Unteres Kapital alt verstärkt, Vorsätze erneuert, erstes Titelblatt sorgsam mit Japan hinterlegt, dieses im Gelenk etwas gelockert, fachkundig gewaschenes Exemplar, stellenweise finger- und schmutzfleckig.

Prints before 1600, Bibles, Classics in Original Languages – Post-Incunabula. - Two rare, fully illustrated first editions of Johannes Eck's precious commentaries on the logic of Aristotle and Petrus Hispanus. - Scarce. No copy in the international trade, only 3 further copies sold at auctions within the last 20 years. - In the first volume, Eck deals with the 'Summulae logicales', twelve treatises written around 1240 by Petrus Hispanus, the great Portuguese logician of the 13th century, physician and later Pope John XXI. They represent the most popular medieval introduction to logic with a long and finely differentiated history of influence. The text is richly illustrated and, thanks to the two-column print, very clear and concise. Eck's explanatory and mediating commentaries are characterised by exceptional knowledge and an exemplary capacity for abstraction. - The same applies to the annotated edition of Aristotle's Logic, in which Eck demonstrates his astuteness, his considerable rhetorical talent and his remarkable 'joy of disputation'. 'The codification of Aristotelian syllogistics contained therein is still used today.' (cf. Prantl) - The Aristotle volume with numerous marginalia in an old hand. - Provenance: - Abraham Ebensperger, with a corresponding old owner's entry on the title page of Petrus Hispanus. - Lower capital reinforced by old hand, endpapers renewed, first title page carefully backed with Japan, this somewhat loosened at the joint, expertly washed copy, finger- and soil-stained in places.
