Manuskripte und Urkunden – Das Hamzanama erzählt die epischen Abenteuer von Hamza ibn Abd al-Muttalib, dem Onkel des Propheten Mohammed, der als unbesiegbarer Krieger gegen Feinde des Islams kämpft, Könige bekehrt und im mystischen Reich Qaf 18 Jahre lang gegen Dämonen und Zauberwesen streitet. Parallel dazu halten sein treuer Trickster-Gefährte Amar Ayyar und die geliebte Mihr Nigar auf Erden gegen Hofintrigen stand, während Hamza zwischen Heldenruhm, magischen Parallelwelten und Liebestreue hin- und hergerissen wird. Am Ende kehrt Hamza nach unzähligen Schlachten, dem Tod aller Gefährten und persönlichen Tragödien nach Mekka zurück, wo er im Dienst des Propheten fällt und als Märtyrer ins Paradies eingeht. Schwerpunkt ist heroische Jagd, also die Darstellung idealer männlicher Tugenden (Mut, Körperkraft, Reitkunst, Schutz der Gefährten). - Die Wiederholung ähnlicher Szenen mit unterschiedlichen Tieren (Tiger, Leopard, Antilopen) schafft eine Abfolge von Prüfungen, wie sie in epischen Dastans üblich ist. Die Feder wirkt wie eine saubere, aber nicht höfische Kopie (kein extrem feiner nastaliq" eines kaiserlichen Ateliers). Die im Manuskript enthaltenen Datierungen auf den braunen Schmutzblättern und ein britisch-indischer Stempel ("Government of India - Four Annas") deuten auf Nordindien in der späten Kolonialzeit hin.
