Portrait
Gemälde, Zeichnungen u. Grafiken 16. bis 19. Jhd. – Privatsammlung, Remscheid. Insgesamt sehr gut.
Paintings, drawings and prints 16th to 19th century – Oil on canvas. Dated and titled. Partially slightly dusty and with delicate craquelure, isolated tiny paint flakes. Overall very good. - Private Collection, Remscheid, Germany. - With his portrait of his wife Isabella Telghuys, painted in 1838, Nicaise de Keyser follows in the tradition of Belgian portraiture from the early days of the nation state after 1830, when the young kingdom was establishing its cultural identity. Painting played a central role in bourgeois representation and national identity. Aspects such as dignity, education, modesty and moral integrity represent the bourgeois ideals that de Keyser captures in his portrait of his wife through the balanced composition with reduced colouring and the calm, controlled posture of the subject, who is also holding a book in her hands.
