Portrait

Gemälde, Zeichnungen u. Grafiken 16. bis 19. Jhd. – Privatsammlung, Norddeutschland. Insgesamt sehr gut.

Paintings, drawings and prints 16th to 19th century – Oil on canvas. Signed and dated. Framed in a gold-coloured frame with ornamental corner decoration. - Slight, barely noticeable craquelure with a few tiny paint chips. Overall very good condition. - Private collection, Germany. - Johann Bucher, who spent several years in Rome and then worked as a painter in Switzerland, was one of the first artists in Switzerland to incorporate daguerreotypes into his portraiture. With this painting, he remains firmly within the context of classical 19th-century portraiture, focusing on a realistic yet idealised conception of the portrait. Stylistically rooted in the Biedermeier tradition, the painting shows a calm half-length portrait of a young lady against a neutral, warm-toned background. The restrained colouring and clear composition draw the viewer's gaze to the subject's face, whose finely crafted features and serious, composed expression convey inner composure and dignity.
