Hirten bei der Rast an Meeresküste. Um 1856 - 1860. Öl auf Leinwand. 66 cm x 111,5 cm. Verso auf einem am Keilrahmen montierten, alten Holzstück betitelt, zusätzlich von fremder Hand mit weiteren Bezeichnungen. Gerahmt. - Entlang der Ränder punktuell mit leichtem Farabrieb als Spur der Rahmung. Sehr vereinzelt kaum merkliches, feines Craquelé. Unter UV keine Retuschen erkennbar. Insgesamt sehr gut. Mediterrane, sommerliche Szene mit Hirten.

Jhd. – Provenienz: - Norddeutschland. - Schloss Ahlden, Auktion 175, Los 1479. - Aus dem Nachlass einer mit dem Künstler befreundeten Familie. - Beigegeben: Historische Postkarte desselben Motives, verso mit typographischen Angaben zu Künstler und Werk. - Stückelberg galt bereits zu Lebzeiten als einer der populärsten Maler der Schweiz im ausgehenden 19. Jhd. Während seiner Ausbildung konnte er Kontakte zu Künstlern wie Hieronymus Hess, Ludwig Adam Kelterborn und Anselm Feuerbach knüpfen und lernte später Arnold Böcklin und Gottfried Keller kennen. Er studierte u. a. von 1854-1856 an der Kunstakademie München. Nach dem Abschluss reiste Stückelberg 1856 nach Italien und besuchte Rom und Florenz. Er blieb bis 1860 in Italien und erlebte dort fruchtbare, schaffensreiche Jahre. Er reiste gezielt in entlegene Regionen und Bergdörfer, um sich dem kontemplativen Landleben motivisch zu widmen. Aus jener Zeit stammt vermutlich unsere Szene mit Hirten. Stückelberg befreit sein Sujet bewusst von der bukolischen Bildtradition und zeigt souverän einen Realismus, geprägt von kräftigen Konturen, einem geschichteten Bildaufbau und einer mit trockenem Pinsel bearbeiten Leinwand, die die flirrende Hitze des Momentes eindrucksvoll vermittelt.

Framed. - Slight colour abrasion in places along the margins as a trace of framing. Very occasional, barely noticeable fine craquelure. No retouches visible under UV light. Overall very good. Mediterranean summer scene with shepherds. - Provenance: - Northern Germany. - Schloss Ahlden, auction 175, lot 1479 - From the estate of a family friend of the artist. - Enclosed: Historical postcard of the same motif, with typographical information about the artist and this painting on the verso.
