Italienische Landschaft. Um 1840. Öl auf Leinwand, ganzflächig kaschiert auf Holzplatte. 19,6 x 28,4 cm. Signiert. Im goldgefasstem Stuckrahmen mit floralem Dekor gerahmt. - Entlang der Ränder vereinzelt mit kaum merklichen Farbabrieb als Spur der Rahmung. Mittig eine punktuelle Retusche. Firnis etwas angegilbt. Holz verso mit kleineren Kratzern. Insgesamt sehr gut. Idyllische Ansicht des italienischen Landlebens mit Staffagefiguren.

Gemälde, Zeichnungen u. Grafiken 16. bis 19. Jhd. – August Lucas war ein Vertreter der deutschen Malerei der Romantik. Wie so viele Künstler zu der Zeit, begab sich der in Darmstadt geborene Autodidakt 1829 - 1834 für Studienzwecke auf eine ausgedehnte Reise nach Italien. Neben den Städten Rom und Neapel, interessierte sich Lucas besonders für die italienische Landschaft um den Ort Olevano nahe Rom, der zu einem Anziehungspunkt für etliche Künstler und schließlich zu einer sog. Künstlerkolonie wurde. Die Landschaft um Olevano entsprach weniger dem arkadischen Ideal und war stattdessen geprägt von vielen Eichenwäldern und einer wilderen, herberen Natur mit Wacholder und Rosen. Wie viele seiner Künstlerkollegen war auch August Lucas hingerissen von der unberührten und kaum bekannten, rauhen Schönheit dieser Region. Aus der angedachten Reise wurde ein Aufenthalt von 4 Jahren, der notgedrungen aufgrund finanzieller Nöte des Künstlers enden musste. Die zahlreichen Studien dienten Lucas zurück zu Hause in Darmstadt als Inspiration und Vorlage für etliche Zeichnungen und Gemälde. In seinen Werken zeichnet sich die Natur als Stimmungsträger aus, ummantelt von sanftem Licht, ergeben sich zutiefst harmonische Szenen, die die Zuneigung Lucas zur italienischen Landschaft deutlich transportieren.

Framed in a gilt stucco frame with floral decoration. - Barely noticeable colour abrasion along the margins as a trace of the framing. A spot of retouching in the centre. Varnish slightly yellowed. Very good overall. Idyllic view of Italian country life with staffage figures. - August Lucas was a representative of German Romantic painting. Like so many artists at the time, the self-taught Darmstadt-born artist travelled extensively to Italy between 1829 and 1834 to study. In addition to the cities of Rome and Naples, Lucas was particularly interested in the Italian landscape around the town of Olevano near Rome, which became a centre of attraction for a number of artists. In his works, nature is characterised by its mood, embedded in soft light, resulting in deeply harmonious scenes that clearly convey Lucas' affection for the Italian landscape.
