Landschaften - Dänemark

Gemälde, Zeichnungen u. Grafiken 16. bis 19. Jhd. – Privatsammlung, Berlin. - Aus dem früheren Besitz von Arnold Klein, Berlin. - Beigabe: Arnold Klein, Reklamezeitung. Einige kleine, punktuelle Fleckchen. An den Kanten leicht berieben. Insgesamt gut.

Paintings, drawings and prints 16th to 19th century – Oil on canvas. Signed and inscribed "Jægersborg Dyrehave" on the reverse. Framed in a gold-coloured stucco moulding with floral decoration. - Varnish slightly soiled, partially with delicate craquelure, in some places with selective loss of paint. A few small, selective spots. Slightly rubbed at the edges. Overall good condition. - Private collection, Berlin. - Formerly owned by Arnold Klein, Berlin. - Accompanied by: Arnold Klein, advertising newspaper. - This painting by Danish landscape painter C.B.S. Berthelsen depicts a park in Jægersborg Dyrehave north of Copenhagen. The depiction combines careful observation of nature with a bourgeois genre scene: two elegantly dressed ladies enliven the summery waterside landscape and allude to the leisure culture of the urban bourgeoisie. The atmosphere is created above all by the nuanced lighting: the summer sunlight refracts in the treetops, reflects on the water's surface and creates a calm, almost contemplative mood. The colour palette is dominated by fresh shades of green and blue, while the figures are highlighted with lighter accents. In this combination of nature observation and social scene, the work documents an important aspect of Danish art around 1880, which was characterised by a harmonious interplay of landscape, light and the depiction of the contemporary attitude to life.
