Varia (mit diversen Schlagworten) – Erste Auflage der sammelwürdigen Trouvaille für Liebhaber des Roulette. - Seltenes Buch über Glücksspiele, insb. Roulette, Trente-et-Quarante und Baccarat. Die Autorin beschreibt 40 verschiedene und im Vorwort als bewährt und risikoarm bewertete Spielsysteme, die sie während eines längeren Aufenthalts in Monte Carlo kennengelernt haben will. Ob das der Fall war, und wenn ja, mit welchem Erfolg, ist nicht bekannt. - Aufgelockert sind die mit allerlei Diagrammen und Tabellen bebeispielten Ausührungen durch 4 Bildtafeln auf Hochglanzpapier, darunter ein Porträt der Verfasserin, eine Panoramaansicht von Monaco sowie Innen- und Außenansichten des Casinos. Der eingebundene Originalumschlag zeigt einen Jetons werfenden Teufel auf dem Roulettetisch. Provenienz: Arndt Wiegandt (1902-45), Verleger und Bibliophiler, mit dessen lithographiertem Exlibris montiert auf dem Vorderdeckel. - Der goldgeprägte Titeldruck des eleganten Handeinbands, wie der Provenienznachweis nahelegt wohl von Wiegand beauftragt, ist als Persiflage auf den Inhalt gedacht. Der Vorderdeckel zitiert Vergils "Aeneis" 3, 56 f: "Auri sacra fames Quid non Mortalia cogis pectora." (Wozu treibst du nicht die Herzen der Menschen, verfluchter Hunger nach Gold!), dortselbst und auf dem Rücken ein weiteres Sprichwort: "Bar Geld lacht". - Ausgezeichnet erhaltenes Exemplar des elegant im Jugendstil gestalteten und auf festem Maschinbütten gedruckten Bandes.

Varia and Miscellaneous – First edition of this collectible find for roulette enthusiasts, illustrated with 4 full-paged photographic illustrations on plates, including the author's portrait as a frontispiece, as well as numerous text illustrations, some full-paged and printed in two colors (red and black). - A rare book on games of chance, especially roulette, trent et quarante, and baccarat. The female author describes 40 different betting systems, which she claims to have learned during an extended stay in Monte Carlo, and which she describes in the preface as tried and tested and low-risk. Whether this was true, and if so, with what success, is unknown. - The explanations, illustrated with various illustrations, diagrams and tables in particular, are interspersed with four glossy plates, including a portrait of the author, a panoramic view of Monaco, and interior and exterior views of the casino. The front part of the original wrappers, bound in, depicts a devil throwing chips on the roulette table. Provenance: Arndt Wiegandt (1902-45), publisher and bibliophile, with his lithographed book-plate mounted on the front cover. - The gilt title print of the elegant morocco binding, likely commissioned by Wiegand himself, as the provenance suggests, is intended as a parody of the content. The front cover quotes Virgil's "Aeneid" 3.56-57: "Auri sacra fames Quid non Mortalia cogis pectora." (Why do you not drive the hearts of men, accursed hunger for gold!), and there, as well as on the spine, another proverb: "Cash laughs." - An excellently preserved copy of this superbly designed Art Nouveau volume, printed on sturdy machine-made laid paper.
