Mit den häufig für den Gesangsgebrauch entfernten 112 Seiten mit Notendrucken am Ende von Band 2. - "Von bemerkenswerter Ausführlichkeit sind namentlich die Darlegungen uber die Messe und das Offizium, uber die Psalmodie und die Hymnodie, uber die römische, mailandische, gallikanische, anglikanische und mozarabische Liturgie und über die de-tempore-Ordnung. Die Heranziehung zahlreicher Belegstellen sowohl aus den Werken der griechischen und lateinischen Kirchenschriftsteller als auch aus den Verfügungen der Synoden und Konzilien lässt die Abhandlung zu einer liturgie- und musikgeschichtlich höchst wertvollen Materialsammlung werden, auf die viele spätere Musikhistoriker zuruckgegriffen haben." (MGG IV, 1785) - Martin Gerbert (1720-93), gelehrter Kleriker und fruchtbarer Kirchenkomponist, stand dem vorderösterreichischen Benediktinerkloster St. Blasien im Schwarzwald seit 1764 als Furstabt vor, in dessen Druckerei und Verlag vorliegendes Werk auch erschienen ist. Provenienz: Beide Titelbl. mit Besitzereintrag d. Zt. eines Angehörigen der Beschuhten Augustiner-Eremiten in Wien. - Taf. III (Bd. 1) mit Einriss, Bll. 1-6 d. 2. Bd. im Fußsteg mit stärker sichtbarem, schmalem Wasserrand, teils gering finger- und stockfleckig, vordere erste fliegende Vorsätze verso mit Besitzervermerk d. 19. Jh., fliegende Vorsätze gebräunt, sonst wohlerhaltener, breitrandiger Exemplarsatz dieses opulent illustrierten, anmutigen Drucks.

Varia and Miscellaneous – First edition of the pioneering work on the history of church music, lavishly illustrated with 2 engraved titles (repeated), 2 large engraved head-pieces and 43 copperplate engravings, 39 of which are folding, numerous musical notes printed in the text (24 of which are on folded leaves), several illustrated initials, as well as head and tail pieces, all in woodcut. - For references see above. - With all 112 pages of musical notationa at the end of volume 2, which were often removed for singing purposes. - "Of particular note for their remarkable detail are the explanations of the Mass and the Office, psalmody and hymnody, the Roman, Milanese, Gallican, Anglican and Mozarabic liturgies, and the de tempore order. The use of numerous references from the works of Greek and Latin ecclesiastical writers as well as from the decrees of synods and councils makes the treatise a highly valuable collection of material on liturgical and music history, which many later music historians have drawn on." (MGG IV, 1785) - Martin Gerbert (1720-93), a learned cleric and prolific church composer, was abbot of the Benedictine monastery of St. Blasien in the Black Forest from 1764, where present print was also executed and published. - Provenance: Both title pages bear the owner's inscription from the time of a member of the Order of Saint Augustine in Vienna. - Plate III (vol. 1) with small tear, lvs. 1-6 of vol. 2 with a visible, narrow water stain at the bottom edge, some slight finger and foxing stains, first fly-leaves verso with owner's remark of the 19th ct., fly-leaves with browning, otherwise well-preserved, wide-margined copy of this opulently illustrated, graceful print.
