Jérusalem, étude et reproduction photographique des monuments de la ville sainte depuis l'époque judäique jusqu'a nos jours. Textband u. Tafeln. Mit 40 montierten Original-Salzpapierabzügen, 2 Tafeln im Stahlstich, 1 chromolithographische Tafel und über 50 Textholzstichen. Paris, Baudry, 1856. 2 Bl. (Vortit., Tit.), 92 S. und 3 Bl. (Vortit., Tit., Tafelverz.), 40 lose Tafeln. Folio (45:32, Tafeln ca. 44:31 cm). HLwd. mit aufgezogenem Original-Lieferumschlag u. losen Tafeln in mod. Halbmaroquin-Kassette mit goldgepr. Rücken- und Deckeltitel (Kassette etw. fingerfleckig, gering beschabt und berieben, HLwd. etw. angestaubt, schmutz- und stockfleckig, Zahl auf Vorderdeckel).

In 1854 he photographed for six months in Jerusalem on behalf of the archeologist Louis Félicien de Saulcy. Saulcy was dating Jewish, Christian, and Islamic architecture and needed pictures to confirm his theories. Salzmann's eye became quickly attuned and his intensive study of ancient stones at very short distances resulted in richly textured images that seem imbued with sacred meaning". - Salzpapierabzügen des Kaiserl. Photoateliers Blanquart-Evrard in Lille (Maße: 15-18:21,5-23 cm, Quer- und Hochformat) zeigen Grabeskirche, Tempel, die Omar-Moschee, Gräber, Stadttore, Brunnen etc., sowie Orte und Landschaften der Umgebung (Bethlehem). - Trägerkartons, Textblätter und Titelei des Tafelbandes und Tafelverzeichnis etwas braun- und stockfleckig (die Abzüge weitestgehend sauber), letztere mit ergänztem Ausriss und einigen hinterlegten Einrissen, Titelblatt des Textbandes zusätzlich mit großem, quer über die Seite in drei Zeilen geschriebenen Vermerk mit (verblasster) Tinte: "Certifée conforme au tirage, Paris 13.X.(18)56" mit nicht entzifferter Unerschrift. - Insgesamt ein repräsentatives Exemplar mit den beeindruckenden Photographien in frischen Abzügen dieses sammelwürdigen Frühdokuments der Photographie.

In 1854, he spent six months photographing in Jerusalem on behalf of the archaeologist Louis Félicien de Saulcy. Salzmann's eye quickly became attuned and his intensive study of ancient stones at very short distances resulted in richly textured images that seem imbued with sacred meaning." - Salt prints (invented by Fox-Talbott in the mid 1830s) from the Imperial Photo Studio Blanquart-Evrard in Lille (dimensions: 15-18:21.5-23 cm, landscape and portrait format) show the Church of the Holy Sepulchre, temples, the Omar Mosque, tombs, city gates, fountains, etc., as well as places and landscapes in the surrounding area (Bethlehem). - Boards with mounted prints, text leaves and loose title and index leave of the plate volume slightly browned and with foxing (the prints are largely clean), the latters with some backed faults and tears, title page of the text volume additionally with a large (editor's or printer's) note written across the page in three lines with (faded) ink: 'Certifée conforme au tirage, Paris 13.X.(18)56' with an indecipherable signature. - Overall, a representative copy with impressive photographs in fresh prints of this highly collectible early document of photography.
