Ägypten

Dekorative Graphik - Ansichten – Hg. John Murray, London 1820. Enthält: 3 Ansichten von Wandmalereien in den Königsgräbern - General View of the Ruins of the Great Temple at Carnac - The Temple at Erments.

Prints and Engravings - Views – 5 hand-coloured lithographs. - One sheet with the fold and a trim mark on the upper right-hand corner. Sheets partly bumped and slightly irregular at the edges, as well as browned, partly with pale age spots and small, scattered brown speckles, some with ink bleed on the reverse. Overall in very good condition with magnificent prints, the colour is fresh. - Published by John Murray, London 1820. Contains: 3 views of wall paintings in the royal tombs - General View of the Ruins of the Great Temple at Carnac - The Temple at Erments. - These lithographs bear witness to the hitherto unprecedented artistic and scholarly engagement with Ancient Egypt in the context of the Napoleonic expedition (1798-1801). In the course of this early scholarly exploration, both wall paintings from the Theban royal tombs and architectural views of monumental temple complexes are reproduced. In doing so, the depictions combine two central trends of their time: the precise, systematic documentation of archaeological findings and their aesthetic presentation in the spirit of contemporary visual culture. The clear contouring, the flat colouring and the removal of the figures from their original context follow a classical principle of order, thereby making the alien visual language of Ancient Egypt accessible and comprehensible to a European audience.
