Von größter Seltenheit, kein Exemplar im internationalen Handel nachweisbar. - Nicht bei Borba de Moraes, oder anderen einschlägigen Referenzwerken. - Das zwischen 1906 und 1911 erschienene Werk versammelt ein einzigartiges photographisches Zeugnis indigener Gemeinschaften des Amazonasgebietes, das der Verfasser auf einer Brasilienreise mit der Kamera festhielt. In 141 im Druck nummerierten und betitelten Tafeln in Heliogravüre präsentiert der Band überwiegend Blätter mit je vier, seltener zwei oder drei Abbildungen, die Porträts, Gruppenaufnahmen und Szenen aus dem Alltagsleben verschiedener "Indianertypen" im frühen 20. Jahrhundert dokumentieren. Eine farblithographische Karte verortet die bereisten Regionen und die Herkunftsgebiete der dargestellten Gruppen im Amazonasraum und erleichtert die geographische Einordnung des Materials. Ergänzt werden die Bildtafeln durch ein gedrucktes Titelblatt sowie sieben gefaltete Druckbogen mit Textblättern, die in ebenso vielen Lieferungen erschienen und erläuternde Informationen zu den einzelnen Serien bieten - etwa zu Namen, Siedlungsgebieten, materieller Kultur und beobachteten Bräuchen. In dieser Verbindung von fotografischer Serie, kartographischer Übersicht und begleitendem Text steht das von Wasmuth in Berlin verlegte Unternehmen exemplarisch für die kolonialzeitliche Visualisierung "fremder Völker" und spiegelt zugleich die wissenschaftlichen wie populären Interessen seiner Entstehungszeit. - Gutes Exemplar.

Extremely rare, no copies are known to be on the international market. - Not listed in Borba de Moraes or other relevant reference works. Published between 1906 and 1911, this work brings together a unique photographic record of indigenous communities in the Amazon region, which the author captured on camera during a journey through Brazil. In 141 plates, numbered and titled in print, produced using heliogravure, the volume primarily presents sheets, each containing four, and more rarely two or three, illustrations documenting portraits, group photographs and scenes from the everyday life of various 'Indian types' in the early 20th century. A colour lithographic map locates the regions visited and the areas of origin of the groups depicted in the Amazon region, facilitating the geographical classification of the material. The picture plates are supplemented by a printed title page and seven folded sheets containing text pages, which appeared in as many instalments and provide explanatory information on the individual series - for example, on names, settlement areas, material culture and observed customs. In this combination of photographic series, cartographic overview and accompanying text, the project published by Wasmuth in Berlin stands as a prime example of the colonial-era visualisation of 'foreign peoples' and simultaneously reflects the scholarly and popular interests of the period in which it was produced. - A fine copy.
