Seine 1850-52 dauernde, durchaus im Geist Humboldt's unernommene Forschungsreise führte ihn über Nova Friburgo, Cantaglo, längs des Rio Pomba nach Mariana und Lagoa Santa, weiters über Cachoeira, Queluz, Barbacena nach Paraiba. "Daß sein küstlerisches Vorgehen eng mit Humboldts Gedanken zur Darstellung der Tropennatur zusammenhing, geht aus seinem Brasilienwerk hervor, in dem er mehrmals von der Physiognomie und dem Totaleindruck der Landschaft im Sinne Humboldts spricht." Geography and Travel – South America. - Brazil First edition of Burmeister's report on his first journey through Brazil, here with the rare atlas volume, which is profusely illustrated with 1 folding and partly coloued map as well as 11 toned lithographs with 13 views on 10 plates and 4 indigenous portraits on 1 plate. Bound in contemporary half morocco with ornamental gilt title (text vol.) and later half morocco by using the older boards and end-papers. - For references see above. - 'This volume is much more difficult to find than the text itself'. Only 3 complete copies at auction in the last 20 years. - The work describes the first journey of the renowned natural scientist and professor of zoology in Halle, Hermann Burmeister (1807-92). His expedition, very much obliged to the spirit of Humboldts, lasted from 1850 to 1852, and took him via Nova Friburgo, Cantaglo, along the Rio Pomba to Mariana and Lagoa Santa, and on via Cachoeira, Queluz, Barbacena to Paraiba. 'That his artistic approach was closely linked to Humboldt's ideas on the representation of tropical nature is evident from his work on Brazil, in which he repeatedly refers to the physiognomy and overall impression of the landscape in Humboldt's sense.' Im Blick von Alexander von Humboldt, 2001, p. 43.) - The plates, 13 in total, include 7 full-page landscape views and 4 indigenous portraits, all executed in tinted lithography by Loeillot based on Burmeister's detailed and skilful drawings. - Title page of the text volume with removed old owner's stamp, front paste-down with label of the 'K.k. Oberrealschule in Linz'. - Plates and text foxy and in parts browned, overall a solid copy of a work that is highly collectible due to the rarity of the plates alone.
