Atlas sive cosmographicae meditationes de fabrica mundi et fabricati figura. Iam tandem ad finem perductus, quamplurimis aeneis tabulis Hispaniae, Africae, Asiae & Americae auctus ac illustratus a Iudoco Hondio. Mit gestochenem Titelblatt, 144, teils radierten Kupferstich-Karten, wovon 141 doppelblattgroß und eine gefaltet, 4 zusätzlichen, gestochenen und teils radierten Zwischentiteln, sowie 1 geometrischer Textholzschnitt. Amsterdam, Hondius, 1606. 8 Bll., 354 Ss. 18 Bll. Folio. Reichlich nach orientalischem Vorbild blind- und goldgeprägter, bzw. -bemalter niederländischer oder deutscher Kalbslederband der Spätrenaissance auf 6 Schmuckbünden mit farbigen Kapitalbändern und umseitigen Rotschnitt (Rücken und Vorsätze im 20. Jh. erneuert, die Decken teils restauriert, etwas beschabt und minimal löchrig, berieben, die Goldfarbe teils abgeblättert).

Geographie und Reisen – Erste von Hondius betreute, und von diesem um 36 eigene Karten erweiterte Ausgabe des wegweisenden Weltatlas von Mercator. - Koeman I:101A. - Phillips I, 422 (f. Ausg. 1607). - Tooley, S. 32. - Mazal, Einbandkunde, S. 218f. -Exemplar mit allen vier der selten eingebundenen, zusätzlichen Kupfertitel für die Kartengruppen "Belgii inferioris", "Gallia", "Germania" und "Italia" (nicht verzeichnet bei Koeman). - Die zweite Ausgabe des für die Geschichte der Kartographie höchst bedeutenden Atlas von Mercator überhaupt, die lateinischen Texte von Petrus Montanus. Die erste Ausgabe war 1602 bei Bernardus Busius in Düsseldorf erschienen. - Karten: Die Karten in den Schwärzen kräftig und satt gedruckt, die radierten Teile oft feingratig. Die Karte "Lacus Lemanus" mit den seltenen Portätminiaturen von Calvin u.a. im unteren Rand. - Einband: Der einbandkünstlerische Ausgestaltung des in der Spätrenaissance hergestellten prachtvollen Einbandes niederländischer oder deutscher nach orientalischen Mustern, wie sie sich schon vor 1500 in Italien ausgebildet haben. Beide Decken mit reicher Blindprägung bzw. Goldprägung und teils mit Goldfarbe handbemalt, diese komponiert aus drei Kettenrahmen, wovon der mittlere mit Eckfleurons, der innere als Raute im Mittelfeld, das prächtige Mittelstück ausgeführt als mit Arabesken und Mauresken ausgefülltes Bandwerk mit dazu korrespondierenden Eckstücken. - Erhaltung: Der Buchblock im Zuge der Neubindung gering beschnitten sowie eng in den Falz gebunden. - Ss. 150-51, Karte "Poictou" mit hinterlegtem und von alter Hand akkurat ergänztem Ausriss. - Ss. 41-54, 73-78, 99-106 ("Transylvania", "Taurica"), 119-122, 135-140, 155-160, 181-200 ("Flandiae orientalis"), 229-232, 275f., im oberen Rand stärker wasserfleckig. - Wie üblich Fehlpaginierung S. "67" statt "76". - Vereinzelt kleine Brandlöcher und alte Sporfleckchen, mitunter gering wurmspurig, stockfleckig, teils etwas stärker braunfleckig, sowie insgesamt leicht fingerfleckig. - Insgesamt aufgrund des vollständigen und grosso modo sehr gut erhaltenen Kartensatzes sowie des unikalen, prächtigen Einbandes ein äußerst sammelwürdiges Exemplar des kartographischegeschichtlichen Ereignisses. - Seltenheit?

Geography and Travel – First Hondius edition of Mercator's groundbreaking world atlas, enlarged by the editior with 36 of his own maps. With engraved title page, all 144 partly etched copperplate maps (141 of which are double-paged and one folded), 4 engraved and partly etched additional title pages, as well as 1 geometric wood-cut text illustration. - For references see above. - Our copy with all four of the additional copperplate title pages for the map groups 'Belgii inferioris', 'Gallia', "Germania" and 'Italia' (not listed in Koeman). - The second edition of Mercator's most important atlas, with Latin texts by Petrus Montanus. The first edition was published in 1602 by Bernardus Busius in Düsseldorf. - Maps: Many of the maps are printed in rich, bold blacks, with the etched parts often finely grained. The map 'Lacus Lemanus' with rare miniature portraits of Calvin et al. in the lower margin. - Binding: The artistic design of the magnificent binding, produced in the Netherlands or Germany in the late Renaissance after Oriental patterns, as they had already been developed in Italy before 1500. Both covers feature rich blind embossing and gold embossing and are partly hand-painted with gold paint. They are composed of three chain frames, the middle one with corner fleurons, the inner one as a rhombus in the centre, and the magnificent centrepiece executed as a band-work filled with arabesques and moresque motifs with corresponding corner pieces. - Condition: The book block has been slightly trimmed during rebinding in the 20th ct. and bound tightly in the fold. - Map 'Poictou' (pp. 150-51) with a backed fault at the lower right, the missing part of the map accurately supplemented by an old hand. - Pp. 41-54, 73-78, 99-106 ('Transylvania', 'Taurica'), 119-122, 135-140, 155-160, 181-200 ('Flandiae orientalis'), 229-232 and 275f. with heavier water-staining in the upper margin. - As usual, incorrect pagination p. "67" instead of '76'. - Very occasional with small holes due to burning, foxing and old fungal spots as well as wormy, some slightly heavier browning, and overall slight finger-stained. - Overall, due to the complete and generally very well-preserved set of maps and foremost the unique, magnificent binding, this is a highly collectible copy of the Mercator, a most important event in cartographic history.
