Zur Erinnerung an die Reise des Prinzen Waldemar von Preussen nach Indien in den Jahren 1844-1846. 4 Teile in 2 Bänden. Mit getöntem lithographischem Porträt als Frontispiz, 2 illustrierten lithographischen Titeln und 104 (wovon 1 doppelblattgroße) lithographische Tafeln, allesamt getönt, sowie 6 gestochenen grenzkolorierten Karten. Hldr. unter Verwendung der originalen Lwd.-Deckelbezüge, diese mit dekorativ als Flechtwerk blindgeprägten Rahmen und goldgeprägten Deckeltiteln mit dem preussischen Adler recto sowie Darstellung mit den Namen der Schlachten von Moodkee (Mudki), Ferozeshah und Sabraon, die Waldemars Monogramm umgeben, verso, sowie der originalen Vorsätze (die Deckelbezüge restauriert, mit Ergänzungen an den Kanten und an kleinen Fehlstellen, sowie mit Klarlack lackiert).

Geographie und Reisen – Seltene Prachtausgabe der reich illustrierten Reisebeschreibung Prinz Waldemars von Preußen. - Lipperheide Ld 38. - Aschoff 1443. - Yakushi W 17a. - Posthum auf Kosten des Königs hergestellt, in nur kleiner Auflage gedruckt und nicht in den Handel gekommen. Mit einem Vorwort von A. v. Humboldt (Löwenberg 388), Text überarbeitet von H. Mahlmann und des Prinzen Reisebegleiter Graf v. Oriola. - Die Tafeln wurden von F. K. Bellermann, Tempeltei, Haun und Klaus nach den Originalskizzen des Prinzen rein- und in Stein gezeichnet. Mit Ansichten von Aden, Athen, Benares, Candy, Delhi, Kairo, Katmandu, Korfu, Lahore, Madras, Patna, Triest u.a., zahlr. Landschaften aus dem Himalaja (darunter doppelblattgr. Panorama), ferner Eingeborenen- u. Jagdszenen. Teil 4 mit Szenen aus demErsten Sikh-Krieg. - 1844 begleitete Prinz Friedrich Wilhelm Waldemar von Preußen (1817-49) den ehemaligen Hauptmann des Generalstabs, Eduard Graf von Oriola u.a. auf einer Reise durch Sri Lanka, Indien und Nepal. Dort war der Prinz Beobachter im Ersten Sikh-Krieg und wurde Zeuge der Schlachten von Mudki (18. Dezember 1845), Ferozeshah (21. und 22. Dezember 1845) und Sabraon (10. Februar 1846), sh. Goldprägung auf den Hinterdeckeln. Während der Schlacht von Ferozeshah kam sein Reisebegleiter und Freund aus Kindertagen, Dr. Werner Hoffmeister, ums Leben. Hoffmeisters Briefe nach Hause und seine "Memoiren des Autors" sind die wichtigsten biografischen Quellen für das Leben und die Reisen von Prinz Waldemar. Das vorliegende Werk sorgte in Deutschland mit seinen hochwertigen Illustrationen und seinen Berichten über wenig besuchte Orte für Aufsehen. - Textkollation (wie bei Lipperheide): Bd. 1: 3 Bl. Band 1 zu Beginn und am Schluss mit Wasserfleck im Fuß- bzw. Außensteg, gelegentlich mit zahlreichen winzigen schwarzen Rußsprenkeln in den Rängern, vereinzelt auch im Satzspiegel, einige Textblätter mit kleinen Randeinrissen. Einige der Seidenhemdchen mit Knickfalten. - Insgesamt ein sehr repräsentativer Satz eines der wohl aufwändigsten Edition zu Indien überhaupt.

Geography and Travel – Asia. - India. - Rare deluxe edition of Prince Waldemar of Prussia's travelogue about Sri Lanka, India and Nepal, profusely illustrated with tinted lithographic portrait as frontispiece, 2 illustrated lithographic titles and 104 (including 1 double-paged) lithographic plates, all tinted, as well as 6 engraved maps, coloured in outlne. Bound luxuriously in modern half leather by using the original cloth boards, these with decorative blind-embossed frames and gilt cover titles with the Prussian eagle recto and depiction with the names of the battles of Mudki, Ferozeshah, and Sabraon surrounding Waldemar's monogram on the rear, as well as the original endpapers (the covers have been restored, with skilful repair to the edges and small missing areas, as well as coated with clear varnish). - For references see above. - Published posthumously at the king's expense, printed in a small edition only and not available in the trade. With a foreword by A. v. Humboldt (Löwenberg 388), text revised by H. Mahlmann and the prince's travelling companion Count v. Oriola. - The plates were drawn and engraved by F. K. Bellermann, Tempeltei, Haun and Klaus based on the prince's original sketches. With views of Aden, Athens, Benares, Candy, Delhi, Cairo, Kathmandu, Corfu, Lahore, Madras, Patna, Trieste and others, numerous landscapes from the Himalayas (including a double paged lithographic plate with a panorama), as well as scenes of natives and hunting. Part 4 with scenes from the First Anglo-Sikh War. - In 1844, Prince Friedrich Wilhelm Waldemar of Prussia (1817-49) accompanied the former captain of the General Staff, Eduard Graf von Oriola, among others, on a journey through Sri Lanka, India and Nepal. There, the prince was an observer in the First Anglo-Sikh War (1845-46) and witnessed the battles of Mudki, Ferozeshah and Sabraon, see gold embossed coat-of-arms like depiction on the rear boards. During the Battle of Ferozeshah, his travelling companion and childhood friend, Dr Werner Hoffmeister, was killed. Hoffmeister's letters home and his 'Memoirs of the Author' are the most important biographical sources for the life and travels of Prince Waldemar. The work caused a sensation in Germany with its high-quality illustrations and reports on little-visited places. - Text collation (as in Lipperheide), see above. - Somewhat browned and foxed in places. Volume 1 with water stain at the beginning and end in the tail and outer margin, occasionally with numerous tiny black soot spots in the margins, a few also in the print area, some text pages with small marginal tears. Some of the silk shirts with creases. Overall a very representative copy of this probably most luxurious publishing endeavour on India.
