Asien - Himalaya

Geography and Travel – Rare first edition of Hügel's fundamental travelogue and findings about his expedition to northern India and Kashmir. Profusely illustrated with engraved frontispiece, 33 plates, of which 31 lithographic and 2 engraved, 110 partly full-page wood-engraved text illustrations as well as 1 folding lithographic map. - For references see above. - In 1835, Hügel set out from Simla on a journey to the high valley basin of Kashmir. He crossed the Pir Panjal Pass and moved to the city of Kashmir, from where he reached Islamabad in 1836. - Volumes 1-3 contain a portrait of the author by Eaton after Daffinger and Hügel's richly illustrated travelogue. Vol. 4 contains an index and glossary (pt. 1) as well as illustrated scientific treatises (pt. 2) by Hügel himself on "Hindu astrology," by J. Arneth on "Bactrian coins," J. J. Heckel on fish, J. Kollar and L. Redtenbacher on insects (mainly butterflies), and A. Wagner on mammals, the latter two with a total of 31 contrasting, sometimes highly velvety lithographic plates. All of the essays contained are based, among other things, on the extensive collection of more than 32,000 objects that Hügel brought back from his journey, and they provide the earliest detailed descriptions of the region's flora and fauna. - With the large map repeatedly missing "Panjab, Kashmir, Iskard, & Ladhak" by Arrowsmith after Hügel, a "step forward in the cartography of the Himalayan region" (Henze). - Slightly time-stained and occasionally with very minor foxing, otherwise well preserved copy of this important, scarce and collectible work, our set additionally with all 5 lithographic front wrappers bound in.
