Geographie und Reisen – Sehr seltene erste Ausgabe der instruktiven Reisebeschreibung. - Nicht bei Cox. - Eutin I, 515. - Kainbacher I, 96 (für die dt. Ausg. d. J. 1801) - Henze II, S. 386. Im Handel von großer Seltenheit, für uns auf Auktionen der letzten 50 Jahre in nur zwei weiteren Exemplaren nachweisbar. - Der französische Seefahrer, Naturforscher und Sklavenhändler Louis de Degrandpré (1761-1846) unternahm 1786-87 eine Reise entlang der westafrikanischen Küste. "Er stellte Beobachtungen über Natur und Produkte, Sitten und Bräuche der Eingeborenen und nicht zuletzt über die Handelverhältnisse, insbesondere den Sklavenhandel an" (Henze). - Die Karten zeigen die Küste Angolas und das Kap der guten Hoffnung, der Plan das dortige Fort. Die kräftigen und zugleich feinlinigen Kupferstiche "nach der Natur", d.i. recht eigentlich aus der Sicht des europäischen Beobachters stilisiert, mit Darstellungen von und Szenen mit Eingeborenen. - Ss. 165-270 gering wurmspurig, sonst ausnehmend frisches, breitrandiges Exemplar dieses Rarums in schmucken Einbänden.

Geography and Travel – Africa. - Rare first edition of this instructive travelogue, richly illustrated with 11 folding copper engraved plates, of which maps of the coast of Angola and the Cape as well as a sketch of the Cape fort. Neatly bound in modern half morocco. - For further references see above. - French navigator, naturalist and slave trader Louis de Degrandpré (1761-1846) undertook a journey along the West African coast in 1786-87. 'He made observations about nature and products, customs and traditions of the natives and, last but not least, about trade conditions, especially the slave trade' (Henze II, S. 386). - The bold yet finely detailed copperplate engravings with depictions of drawings 'from nature', i.e. stylised from the perspective of the European observer, with depictions of and scenes featuring locals. - Pages 165-270 slightly worm-eaten, otherwise an exceptionally fresh, wide-margined copy of this rarity in attractive bindings.
