10 Inkunabelblätter mit einem ganzseitigen Holzschnitt Die neunt Figur: Vereinigung von 3 Martyrien aus "Schatzbehalter der wahren Reichtümer des Heils", Anton Koberger, Nürnberg, 1491. Verso bzw. zweiseitig bedruckter zweispaltiger Text mit zahlr. rubrizierten Initialen. Je ca. 31,8 x 22 cm (Blattgröße), 24,6 x 15,6 (Druckspiegel).

Alte Drucke, Bibeln, Klassische Autoren in den Originalsprachen – Der schöne Holzschnitt nach Michael Wolgemuth (1434-1519) und Wilhelm Pleydenwurff (1460-1494): Die 9. Figur zeigt 3 verschiedene Martyrien. In der Bildmitte sieht man einen König auf einem Baldachinthron sitzen, der offensichtlich den Befehl zur Steinigung eines Mannes gibt, der in der linken unteren Bildecke mit dem König diskutierend gezeigt wird. Hinter diesem Mann stehen zwei Schergen, von denen einer mit beiden Händen einen großen Stein über den Kopf hält, um ihn mit voller Wucht auf das Opfer zu werfen. Der andere Scherge hält in einem Arm drei kleinere Steine und holt mit seiner Rechten gleichsam zum Wurf aus. Der Mann, der hingerichtet werden soll, besitzt keine Attribute. Lediglich eine Gruppe betender Menschen knien ihm gegenüber. Im Hintergrund sieht man rechts des Thrones, wie ein am Boden kniender Mann einem anderen, auf dem Rücken liegenden Mann den Bart rauft. Ein Mann und eine Frau sind ähnlich wie die betende Gruppe im Vordergrund Zeugen des Martyriums. Ganz zuoberst sieht man schließlich einen Mann in einen aufrechtstehenden Baumstamm eingespannt, während sein Körper von zwei Männern mit einer Zug säge durchtrennt wird (D. Bartl). Der Schatzbehalter ist das einzige Werk Fridolins, das bereits zu seinen Lebzeiten in gedruckter Form veröffentlicht wurde... gilt als Höhepunkt in der Geschichte der Nürnberger Druckerei. Von dem seltenen Werk sind heute weltweit knapp 140 Exemplare nachweisbar. - Teils etwas gebräunt u. braunfleckig, kleine Randeinrisse, 1 Textbl. Mit größerem durchschlagendem Braunfleck, 2 Bll. mit kleinen Annotationen von alter Hand.

Prints before 1600, Bibles, Classics in Original Languages – Incunabula. - This beautiful woodcut, based on works by Michael Wolgemuth (1434-1519) and Wilhelm Pleydenwurff (1460-1494), depicts three different martyrdoms in the ninth panel. In the centre of the picture, a king is seen sitting on a canopy throne, evidently giving the order to stone a man who is shown arguing with the king in the lower left-hand corner of the picture. Behind this man stand two executioners, one of whom is holding a large stone above his head with both hands, ready to hurl it with full force at the victim. The other henchman holds three smaller stones in one arm and is, as it were, winding up to throw with his right hand. The man who is to be executed has no attributes. Only a group of praying people kneel opposite him. In the background, to the right of the throne, a man kneeling on the ground is seen pulling the beard of another man lying on his back. A man and a woman, much like the praying group in the foreground, bear witness to the martyrdom. At the very top, finally, a man is seen strapped to an upright tree trunk, whilst his body is being sawed in two by two men using a draw saw (D. Bartl). The Schatzbehalter is the only work by Fridolin that was published in print during his lifetime... and is regarded as a high point in the history of the Nuremberg printing trade. Today, just under 140 copies of this rare work are known to exist worldwide. - Some pages are slightly tanned and have brown spots, there are small tears at the edges, one page of text has a large brown stain that has bled through, two pages contain small annotations in old handwriting.
