Technik – Zweite, unveränderte Ausgabe des einflußreichen, avanciert illustrierten Klassikers der Uhrmacherkunst. - Brunet I, 819 ('Ouvrage un de plus estimés que l'on ait sur cet art.') - Houzeau-Lancaster II, 10199. - Pogendorff I, 168. - Der berühmte Uhrmacher Ferdinand Berthoud (1727-1807) aus dem Schweizerischen Kanton Neuchâtel arbeitete seit 1745 in Paris, wo er die ersten Uhren für die französische Marine herstellte. Bald zum Uhrmacher des Königs ernannt verfasste Berthoud zahlreiche Publikationen zum Thema. In der vorliegenden untersucht Berthoud die Möglichkeiten zum Ausgleich von Temperaturschwankungen, beschreibt astronomische Uhren, Uhren für die Seefahrt usw. Die Fachliteratur lobt insbesondere die zeichnerisch avancierte Illustration des Werks, die auch schon die Erstausgabe von 1736 zierten: 'The drawings are admirable, many are in perspective and some show what are now termed exploded views.' (Baillie, S. 262). - Provenienz: Gabriel Koenigs (1858-1931, französischer Mathematiker und Professor der Université Paris, mit dessen gedruckten Bibliotheksetikett auf beiden Vorderspiegeln. - Die Tafeln und stellenweise auch der Text mitunter leicht stock-, finger- und wasserfleckig, insgesamt gut erhaltenes Exemplar des Rarums.

Technique – Second, unchanged edition of this advanced illustrated classic on the art of watchmaking. - Brunet I, 819 ("One of the most highly regarded works on this art.") - Houzeau-Lancaster II, 10199. - Pogendorff I, 168. - The famous watchmaker Ferdinand Berthoud (1727-1807) from the Swiss canton of Neuchâtel worked in Paris from 1745, where he manufactured the first watches for the French navy. Soon appointed watchmaker to the king, Berthoud wrote numerous publications on the subject. In this work, Berthoud examines the possibilities for compensating for temperature fluctuations, describes astronomical clocks, clocks for seafaring, etc. The specialist literature particularly praises the advanced illustrations in the work, which also adorned the first edition of 1736: 'The drawings are admirable, many are in perspective and some show what are now termed exploded views.' (Baillie, p. 262). - Provenance: Gabriel Koenigs (1858-1931, French mathematician and professor at the University of Paris, with his printed bookplate on both front paste-downs. - Text and plates occasionally with foxing, finger- and water-stains, overall a well-preserved copy of this precious work.
