Zoologie - Entomologie - Schmetterlinge

Naturwissenschaften – Nissen ZBI, 2877. - Wohlerhalten.

Natural Sciences – Zoology. - Entomology. - With 215 original hand-colored lithographs by and after Moore. Frederic Moore's great, magnificent, classic standard work on the butterfly fauna of Ceylon (Sri Lanka), published in three volumes between 1880 and 1887 in London by L. Reeve with special support from the Government of Ceylon. In it, Moore systematically covers the island's butterflies and moths, scientifically describes numerous species for the first time, and provides detailed information on morphology, variability, distribution, and lifestyle, as far as was known at the time. Particular emphasis is placed on depicting the developmental stages: many species are described and illustrated in the egg, larval, pupal, and adult stages. The volumes are richly illustrated with large-format, fine lithographic plates, often in vivid colors, which depict the tropical butterfly fauna in great detail. The plates are based on drawings derived from works by local artists and Moore's own studies, they remain an important iconographic source for the lepidopterology of South Asia to this day. - In good condition.
