Seine 441 feinen Tafeln sind außerordentlich zart von Hand koloriert und von Bock, Sturm, Tyroff, Volkart, Walbert u. a. nach Espars eigenen Zeichnungen gestochen. Erstmals als Folge von Foliobänden zwischen 1776 und 1807 veröffentlicht, wurde "Die Schmetterlinge in Abbildungen nach der Natur ." schließlich in den Jahren 1829 bis 1839 offiziell als Reihe von fünf Bänden herausgegeben. Zwischen den Textseiten eingelegt waren prachtvoll kolorierte Tafeln mit detailreichen Abbildungen von Schmetterlingen, häufig in den verschiedenen Stadien ihres Lebenszyklus, wobei in einer einzigen Darstellung bemerkenswerterweise sowohl die Ober- als auch die Unterseite der Flügel gezeigt wurde. In der Sorgfalt, mit der Esper bei einer gegebenen Art auf die Bestimmungen anderer führender Naturforscher seiner Zeit - darunter Carl von Linné und Johann Fabricius - verwies, und in der kompakten, detailgesättigten Anlage seiner Illustrationen markierte dieses wichtige Werk einen Wendepunkt in der europäischen Naturgeschichtsforschung und in der Verlagswelt, die sie förderte. Eugenius Johann Christoph Esper (1742-1810) war ein bedeutender deutscher Naturforscher des späten 18. und frühen 19. Jahrhunderts. Ursprünglich Theologiestudent, fand Esper schließlich seine eigentliche Berufung in der Naturgeschichte, der er sich widmete, während er als Hauslehrer für eine wohlhabende Familie des bayerischen Landadels tätig war.

Its 441 exquisite plates are exquisitely hand-colored and engraved by Bock, Sturm, Tyroff, Volkart, Walbert, and others based on Espar's own drawings. First published as a series of folio volumes between 1776 and 1807, "Die Schmetterlinge in Abbildungen nach der Natur" was finally officially issued as a five-volume set between 1829 and 1839. Inserted between the text pages were magnificently colored plates with detailed illustrations of butterflies, often in the various stages of their life cycle, with both the upper and lower surfaces of the wings remarkably shown in a single depiction. In the care with which Esper referred to the classifications of other leading naturalists of his time-including Carl von Linné and Johann Fabricius-for a given species, and in the compact, detail-rich layout of his illustrations, this important work marked a turning point in European natural history research and in the publishing world that fostered it. Eugenius Johann Christoph Esper (1742-1810) was a prominent German naturalist of the late 18th and early 19th centuries. Originally a theology student, Esper eventually found his true calling in natural history, to which he devoted himself while working as a private tutor for the bavarian nobility.
