Schriftgelehrte. 1911. Strich- und Tonätzung von der Kupferplatte auf Van Gelder Zonen Bütten (mit Wz.). 26,7 x 30 cm (60 x 44,4 cm). Signiert, mittig im unteren Rand in Bleistift von Ada Nolde betitelt "Schriftgelehrte". In Punkten auf Unterlage montiert, unter Passepartout und Glas gerahmt. - Papier mit zarter Anbräunung (etw. stärker im Passepartoutausschnitt), vereinzelt mit blassbraunen Fleckchen, im rechten Rand zwei restaurierte Einrisse sowie mit kleinen Läsuren, partiell minimal fleckig, vereinzelt mit Anmerkungen in Bleistift (diese teils ausradiert), im oberen Rand im Bereich der Montierung mit leichter Verfärbung. Insgesamt sehr gut. Prachtvoller Druck mit filigraner Strich- und differenzierter Tonätzung, mit breitem Rand. Sehr selten.

Klassische Moderne – Schiefler/Mosel/Urban I, 154 II. - Eines von etwa 21 Exemplaren. - Druck bei Sabo, Felsing. - Die Tendenz zum Malerischen beherrscht auch das druckgraphische Schaffen Noldes, in welchem er auf eine emotionale Verdichtung durch Lichtdramaturgie und formale Zuspitzung zielt. Indem er hier auf die Kupferplatte zurückgreift, ist sie in ihrer rauhen Oberfläche dem füe die Schwarkunstmanier (Manière Noire) präparierten Metall ähnlich und zeigt sich in tiefschwarz wiedergegebenen Bildflächen. Dies zeigt sich auch deutlich in der Arbeit "Schriftgelehrte" von 1911. Dargestellt sind vier Figuren, deren Körper und teils monumental wirkende Köpfe sich in einem stark verdichteten, nahezu raumlosen Bildfeld drängen. Die mit scharfen Kontrasten und kraftvoll geführten Linien herausgearbeiteten Gesichter der Figuren erscheinen blockhaft und maskenartig, was Noldes formale Reduktion und seine expressive Modellierung unterstreicht. Gerahmt von zwei Rückenfiguren wird der Betrachter unmittelbar in das konzentrierte, nahezu rituell erscheinende Geschehen eingebunden, kann sich der suggestiven Kraft der Darstellung nicht entziehen. Diese von Nolde inszenierte, spannungsvolle Nähe zur Szene verweist auf das Interesse des Künstlers an existenziellen Erfahrungen, welche über das rein Dargestellte hinauswirken.

Spot-mounted to backing, framed under mat and glass. - Paper with delicate browning (somewhat stronger in the mat section), occasional pale brown stains, two restored tears in the right margins, partially minimally stained, occasional annotations in pencil (these partially erased), slight discolouration in the upper margin in the area of the mount. Overall very good. Splendid impression with filigree line and differentiated tone etching, with wide margins. Very rare. - Schiefler/Mosel/Urban I, 154 II - One of about 21 copies. - Print by Sabo, Felsing. - The painterly element also characterises Nolde's graphic work, in which he seeks an emotional intensity through the dramaturgy of light and formal accentuation. This can also be clearly recognised in the work 'Schriftgelehrte' (Scholars) from 1911, which depicts four figures whose bodies and partially monumental-looking heads are crowded into a highly condensed, almost spaceless pictorial field. The figures' faces, elaborated with sharp contrasts and powerful lines, appear almost block- and mask-like, underlining Nolde's formal reduction and expressive modelling. Framed by two figures seen from the back, the viewer is directly involved in the concentrated, almost ritualistic scene and cannot escape the suggestive power of the depiction. This tense proximity to the scene, staged by Nolde, points to the artist's interest in existential experiences that have an effect beyond the purely depicted.
