Lot 277 Heinrich Vogeler. Erster Sommer. 1904. …

Erster Sommer. 1904. Radierung auf Japan. 34,5 x 24,5 cm (41,8 x 32 cm).

Fin de Siecle – Etching on Japan paper. Signed and with artist's signet (spiral) as well as signed by printer Otto Felsing. Spot-mounted to underlying mat and framed under glass (unopened). - Isolated slight handling/Crease marks in margins, very few, very slight pinch pleats due to printing, paper in margins partly hardly buckled, seemingly all in all very good. Splendid, burr-like and finely nunaced impression with blindly imrpessed facte and finely-drawn plate mark, with wide margin. - Final state, in blue, printed by Otto Felsing, Berlin, before the later edition from 1920. Without the remarque in lower plate margin as mentioned by Rief. - Covered in delicate foliage and surrounded by towering birch trees, Vogeler depicts his wife Martha with their firstborn daughter Marieluise. Sitting on a wooden bench, lovingly cradling the child in her arms, both are nestled in a fairytale-like natural world, even though they are in the garden of their home, Barkenhoff. Typical of Vogeler is the overlapping between home and fairy-tale world, expressed in the formal language of Art Nouveau. - Our print in relation to the painting of the same name owned by Kunsthalle Bremen (inv. no. 308-1906/11).
