Jahrhundertwende – Provenienz: Privatsammlung, Berlin. - Max Stern gehört zu den wenigen deutschen Künstlern, die sich früh dem französischen Impressionismus öffneten und dessen Farb- und Lichtauffassung mit der Tradition der Düsseldorfer Malerschule verbanden. Zwischen Impressionismus, Haager Schule und Neuer Sachlichkeit entwickelte er eine Malerei von lebendigem Pinselduktus, die vor allem dem städtischen Leben galt, belebten Plätzen, Straßencafés und Szenen des einfachen Alltags. Das Gemälde zeigt ein Paar inmitten einer Menschenmenge: Die leuchtend rote Kleidung der Frau kontrastiert mit den gedämpften Tönen der Umgebung und zieht den Blick in den ruhigen Mittelpunkt des Bildes. Mit lockerem Pinselstrich und feinem Lichtspiel schafft Stern eine Balance zwischen Nähe und Distanz, Intimität und Anonymität, weitere zentrale Motive seines Schaffens. Das Paar in der Menge steht dabei exemplarisch für Sterns künstlerische Haltung in der Zwischenkriegszeit: eine Kunst, die Empathie und Beobachtung verbindet und in der Spannung zwischen moderner Großstadt und menschlicher Verbundenheit ihren Ausdruck findet.

Scene composed with lively brushstrokes in bright, fresh appearing colours. - Provenance: Private collection, Berlin. - Max Stern is one of the few German artists who embraced French Impressionism early on and combined its approach to colour and light with the tradition of the Düsseldorf school of painting. Between Impressionism, the Hague School and New Objectivity, he developed a style of painting with lively brushstrokes that focused primarily on urban life, bustling squares, street cafés and scenes of everyday life. The painting depicts a couple in the midst of a crowd: the woman's bright red clothing contrasts with the muted tones of her surroundings and draws the viewer's gaze to the calm centre of the picture. With loose brushstrokes and subtle play of light, Stern creates a balance between closeness and distance, intimacy and anonymity, other central themes of his work. The couple in the crowd exemplifies Stern's artistic attitude in the interwar period: an art that combines empathy and observation and finds its expression in the tension between modern city life and human connection
