German Post War – Chalk on vellum. Monogrammed. Cut out in passe-partout. - Corners with minimal holes and slits from previous mounting. Slight paper loss in upper right corner. Minor crease marks. Verso with mounting marks and sporadic brown spots. Edges slightly bumped. Overall very good. Dynamic and magnificent work. - Bernhard Schultze (1915-2005) was one of the most influential representatives of German Informel and co-founder of the Quadriga artists' group, which established gestural abstraction in Germany in the 1950s. His work is characterised by dynamic, often eruptive colours and forms, in which spontaneous lines and painterly density intertwine. Schultze became famous above all for his so-called 'Migofs,' hybrid, fantastical beings that appear as symbols of transformation, imagination, and the disorder of the world. In his paintings and sculptural works, he combines gestural freedom with an idiosyncratic poetic imagery that expands Informel with a narrative, imaginative dimension.
