Theology and Religious Studies – With facsimile portrait frontispiece, 1 full-paged copperplate engraving and 4 wood-cut diagrams (2 of which are on facsimile sheet). British leather binding from around 1800 with gilt ornamental title on spine and ornamental borders, as well as gilt edges (minimally bumped, worn and soiled, joints and spine with skilfull inconspicuous restoration). - First and only edition of this major works by English astrologer, occultist and Rosicrucian John Heydon. - Extremely rare in trade, only two other copies whatsovever traceable for us at auction (1971, 1964). - Present impression with the 1st title as listed above and the publisher's name Samuel Ferris. "This is an excellent work and by many considered his best. It starts with a Chemical Dictionary, then Book I deals with philosophy, Book II Numbers a reprint of his work, the R.C. "Axiomata," with a fine plate, Book III, Long Life, Book IV, Virtue of Minerals, Book V, Gold and Rosicrucian Medicines, Book VI, The Rosie Cross Uncovered, with a most charming piece at the end, called "The Rosie Crucian's Prayer to God." The whole of this book is virtually a reprint of the preface to his work, "The R.C. Axiomata," published in 1660" (Gardner). - Heydon, who was accused by his contemporaries of plagiarism (of Thomas Browne, Thomas Vaughan among others), can be classified more as a compilatory spirit, however was later highly regarded by Ezra Pound, among others. - Missing portrait frontispiece and fol. f4 (with 2 of the four woodcut diagrams), both bound in as facsimiles, fol. f4 skilfully mounted on old handmade paper. - Somewhat browned and occasionally with minor soiling and finger stains, some leaves slightly water-stained, 1-2 small wormholes in the margins at the beginning. Isolated small marginal tears, the 1st title with heavier trimming as well as supplemented and reinforced in the side margin, missing letters and the border line supplemented by hand, fol. f5 at the bottom with supplemented marginal tear, missing words added by hand. First title with faded old handwritten ownership note, last leaf of part 1 verso with handwritten ownership note by 'Thomas Norton', dated 1'934'.
