VIII, 245. - Vollmer I, 506. - Vollständig, mit wohlerhaltener Mappe und Tafeln wie hier selten, für uns auf Auktionen so nicht nachweisbar. - Erschien als erste von drei Mappen einer von Martin Gerlach herausgegebenen Reihe "Die Quelle". Die meist zweifarbigen, teils goldgehöhten Tafeln mit insgesamt über 100 als "Vignetten" bezeichneten Zeichnungen zur Gestaltung von Ex Libris, Menükarten u.a. Drucksorten. Die hier vorliegenden "Vignetten" von Carl Otto Czeschka (1878-1960), eines der bedeutendsten Künstler der Wiener Werkstätte, gelten neben Kolo Mosers "Flächenschmuck", ebenfalls als Mappe in Gerlachs "Die Quelle" erschienen, als künstlerisch wertvollste Beiträge zum Grafikdesign des Wiener Jugendstils. Die Publikationen dienten verschiedenen Kunsthandwerkern als Vorlagenwerk. - Titelblatt mit leicht sichtbaren Stockflecken, ebenso leicht stockfleckig der Vorderdeckel der Mappe, Hintergelenk an einer Stelle gering eingerissen, sonst wohlerhaltenes Exemplar mit frischen Tafeln.

Modern Literature and Art – First and only edition of this gorgeous Vienna Art Noveau jewel, Czeschka's first independent publication. - Thieme/B. VIII, 245. - Vollmer I, 506. - Complete and with a well-preserved portfolio and plates like here very rare, in this state not for us at auctions. - Published by Martin Gerlach as the first of three portfolios in a series "Die Quelle" (The Source). The mostly two-color, partly gilt-heigthened plates contain a total of over 100 motifs referred to as "vignettes" for the design of bookplates, menus, and other printed material. Carl Otto Czeschka's (1878-1960), one of the most important artists of the Wiener Werkstätte, designs are considered, along with Kolo Moser's "Flächenschmuck" (Surface Decoration), also published as a portfolio in Gerlach's "Die Quelle", to be the most artistically valuable contributions to Viennese Art Nouveau graphic design. The publications served as a pattern book for various artisans. - Title page with slightly visible foxing, the front cover of the portfolio also slightly foxed, the back joint minimally torn in one place, otherwise a well-preserved copy with fresh plates.
