Geschichtswissenschaften – Goedeke IV/1, 302, 14. Ruppert S. 18.

History – 2 in 1 vol. With 12 (1 full-page) engraved vignettes. Vignettes and 208 engravings on 111 plates, 19 of which folded. Contemp. paperback with gilt stamped title label (spine restored, heavily rubbed and bumped, some damage to standing edges). - First complete German edition of Winkelmann's main work on art hermeneutics, with which he founded archaeology and art history in Germany. - The first German edition appeared in 1792, the original Italian edition was published in Rome in 1767-1779 under the title "Monumenti antichi inediti spiegati ed illustrati". - "In contrast, the great hermeneutical work on art, the Monumenti antichi inediti (Rome 1767, 2 vols. in fol.), is a legacy for all time that does the greatest honor to Winckelmann's name. As early as 1763, he announced it in the preface to the "History of Art" as a work "which will be published in the spring of next year in Rome, printed in French at my own expense, on shelf folio. It is an explanation of monuments of antiquity of all kinds that have never been made public, especially of raised works in marble, many of which were difficult to explain, others have been declared by experienced experts in antiquity to be partly unsolvable riddles and partly completely erroneous". The richly decorated work, produced at his own expense and dedicated to Cardinal Albani, contains 216 plates on which the most diverse ancient monuments of art are reproduced, most of them reliefs and these again with regard to the Villa Albani. t" (J. Vogel in ADB XLIII, 343 ff.) - Slight foxing, margins slightly browned. Overall a very good, complete copy.
