The Paul and Marianne Gourary Collection of Illustrated Fête Books - nicht bei Graesse und Brunet - Erste und einzige, äußerst seltene Ausgabe dieses prachtvoll illustrierten Festbuchs. - Die 1. große merfach gefalt. Tafel zeigt eine Statue Friedrichs auf einer von einer Tempelarchitektur umrahmten Sockel, umgeben von Putten und anderen allegorischen Figuren, die 2. gefalt. Tafel ein gestoch. Porträt Friedrich I. von J(ohann) G(eorg) Wolf(f)gang nach (Wilhelm Friedrich) Weidemann (datiert 1718). - Die auffallende Serie von 118 Tafeln des Trauerzuges ist nicht signiert, aber wahrscheinlich nach Johann Fridrich Eosander Freiherr Göthe und anderen, und summiert sich auf eine Länge von über 60 Metern. - Unter der Herrschaft Friedrichs (1688-1713) erlebte das Land durch die Aufnahme verfolgter Hugenotten, die Gründung der späteren Preußischen Akademie der Wissenschaften und den Ausbau Berlins zu einer barocken Residenzstadt einen kulturellen Aufschwung. Mit der Erhebung des Herzogtums Preußen zum Königreich im Jahr 1701 legte Friedrich den Grundstein für die Entwicklung des preußischen Staates zu einer europäischen Großmacht. - Mit Exlibris Schildchen im Innendeckel. - Teils etw. fleckig bzw. fingerfleckig, wenige Textbll. etw. gebräunt, etw. knickspurig, einige Tafeln mit hinterlegten Defekten. Insgesamt sehr gut. Ausgesprochen wohlerhaltenes Exemplar des seltenen, reich illustrierten Festbuchs.

History – Prussia. - With 4 large, folded copper engraved plates, 118 numbered plates (recte 119 - plate no. 98 printed twice), of which 115 double-page, 1 full-page (plate 97), 1 double-page and one full-page (both numbered 98), with 1 engraved title vignette and numerous ornamental woodcut vignettes and initials. Cont. calf over 6 bands with gilt title to spine, gilt fillet and three-sided speckled edges (rubbed, scuffed and bumped, somewhat stained, cover with small defects in upper and lower capital, endpapers and inner covers somewhat glue-shaded and browned). - First and only, exceptionally rare edition of this sumptuously illustrated ceremonial book. - The 1st large folded plate depicts a statue of Frederick on a pedestal framed by temple architecture, surrounded by putti and other allegorical figures. The 2nd plate depicts an engraved portrait of Frederick I. Portrait of Frederick I by J(ohann) G(eorg) Wolf(f)gang after (Wilhelm Friedrich) Weidemann (dated 1718). - The striking series of 118 plates of the funeral procession is unsigned, but probably after Johann Fridrich Eosander Freiherr Göthe and others, and adds up to a length of over 60 metres. - Under Frederick's reign (1688-1713), the country experienced a cultural boom through the admission of persecuted Huguenots, the founding of the later Prussian Academy of Sciences and the expansion of Berlin into a baroque residential city. With the elevation of the Duchy of Prussia to a kingdom in 1701, Frederick laid the foundations for the development of the Prussian state into a major European power. - Some spotting and fingerstaining, a few text pages somewhat browned, a few creases, some plates with backed defects. Overall very good. Exceptionally well-preserved copy of this rare, richly illustrated commemorative book.
