Geschichtswissenschaften – Buchdeckel von Maria Hiszpanska entworfen. - Wladyslaw "Wladek" Szpilman (1911-2000) war ein polnisch-jüdischer Pianist, Komponist und Memoirenschreiber. Weltberühmt wurde er durch Roman Polanskis Oscar-prämierten Film "Der Pianist" (2002), der auf seinen Memoiren "Smierc Miasta" basiert, in denen Szpilman erzählt, wie er den Holocaust überlebte. Szpilman studierte zwischen 1926 und 1933 in Warschau und Berlin Klavier. Er debütierte 1932 auf der Bühne und begann 1935 mit dem Komponieren populärer Musik. Bis zum Ausbruch des Zweiten Weltkriegs war er für den polnischen Rundfunk tätig. Szpilman wurde 1940 im Warschauer Ghetto inhaftiert, wo er in den dortigen Cafés und Konzertsälen spielte, um seine Familie zu unterstützen. Im Jahr 1943 gelang ihm die Flucht aus dem Ghetto und er versteckte sich bis in die letzten Monate des Jahres 1944, als er von einem Wehrmachtsoffizier, Hauptmann Wilhelm Hosenfeld, entdeckt wurde, der ihm half, bessere Verstecke zu finden und ihn mit Lebensmitteln und Kleidung versorgte. Nach dem Ende des Krieges schrieb Szpilman seine Memoiren über sein Überleben und veröffentlichte sie 1946. Es wurde 1998 in vielen Ländern unter dem abgewandelten Titel "Pianista" (Der Pianist) erneut veröffentlicht und 2002 von Roman Polanski verfilmt. - Annotation auf Vorsatzblatt. He became world-famous by Roman Polanski's Oscar-winner film, "The Pianist" (2002) which is based on this memoir "Smierc Miasta", wherein Szpilman recounts how he survived the Holocaust. Szpilman studied as a pianist in Warsaw and Berlin between 1926-1933. He made his first stage debut in 1932 and started composing popular music in 1935. He was working for the Polish radio until the outbreak of World War II. Szpilman got imprisoned in the Warsaw ghetto in 1940 where he played in its cafes and concert halls to support his family. In 1943 he managed to escape from the ghetto and he was hiding until the last months of 1944 when he was discovered by a Wehrmacht officer, Captain Wilhelm Hosenfeld who helped him to find better places to hide and provided him with food and cloth. After the end of the war Szpilman wrote his memoir about his survival and published it in 1946. It was published again in 1998 in many countries with variant title "Pianista" (The Pianist) and it was adapted to screen in 2002 by Roman Polanski. - Annotation on flyleaf.
