Jahrhunderts – Sammelband mit 11 Schriften des streitbaren, aber unglücklichen Juristen und Rhetors Johann Ernst Philippi (1701-58), wovon zwei in Erstausgabe. - Meusel X, 413-419 (EA v. Nrn. 1 und 11, S. 416 und 418). - Killy, DBE, Bd. 7 (1998). - Im Handel sehr selten, für uns auf Auktionen nicht nachweisbar. Philippi hatte 1731 die Nachfolge Gottscheds als Professor für "Beredsamkeit" in Halle angetreten, sich mit Polemiken u.a. gegen diesen, gleichzeitig mit akademisch zweifelhaften Arbeiten wie der hier vorliegenden Analyse der Rede Ciceros gegen Naevius, aber bald den Unmut der Hallenser Kollegenschaft zugezogen. Diese veranlasste den Satiriker Christian Ludwig Liscow contra personam Philippi zu schreiben (u.a. »Briontes der Jünger«, 1732), was letzterem - nunmehr als Prototyp eines "elenden Scribenten" (Liscow) stigmatisiert - nicht nur Hohn und Spott der Hallenser Studierenden einbrachte, sondern auch zu einem anhaltenden, für Philippi letztlich akademisch ruinösen Schriftenstreit mit Liscow führte. Aus Halle entlassen wurde Philippi 1740 erstmals "als geistesgestört in Gewahrsam genommen" (Killy), und sollte er danach nicht wieder beruflich Fuß fassen. - Das Frontispiz zeigt eine satirische Darstellung des "Privilegirten Plasebalg Händelers" Philippi, der "Wind-Beutel" wie Cicero (und wohl symbolisch auch Liscow und Gottsched) wegbläst. Der Haupttitel und der Anhang "Von dem Rechte der verdeckten Schreib-Art" in Erstausgabe, die anderen 9 Pamphlete waren laut Meusel bereits in den Jahren 1733 und 1734 erschienen. - Fehlpaginierung: 227/8 und 491/2 doppelt vergeben, Paginierung springt von 507 auf 518 und von 528 auf 531. - Einband and den Gelenken, Ecken und Kanten berieben, vorderer fliegender Vorsatz mit Inhaltsverz. u. Anmerkungen mittels Bleistift. Buchblock stellenweise zur Einpassung in die Bindung beschnitten, jedoch immer ohne Textverlust. Insgesamt ein sauberes Exemplar des Rarissimums.

Literature of 17th to 19th Century – Sammelband containing 11 writings by the controversial but unfortunate lawyer and rhetorician Johann Ernst Philippi (1701-58), two of which are first editions. - Extremely rare in trade, no copy whatsoever traceable at auction. - Philippi succeeded Gottsched as professor of rhetorics in Halle in 1731, attracting the displeasure of his colleagues in Halle with polemics against Gottsched, among others, and academically dubious works such as the present analysis of Cicero's speech against Naevius. This prompted the satirist Christian Ludwig Liscow to write contra personam Philippi (including 'Briontes der Jünger' Briontes the Disciple, 1732), which not only earned the latter - now stigmatised as the prototype of a 'miserable scribbler' (Liscow) - the scorn and ridicule of the Halle students, but also led to a protracted dispute with Liscow that ultimately ruined Philippi's academic career. Philippi was dismissed from Halle in 1740, initially 'taken into custody as mentally disturbed' (Killy), and was unable to regain a foothold in his profession thereafter. - The frontispiece shows a satirical depiction of Philippi, the 'privileged windbag manipulator,' blowing away 'windbags' such as Cicero (and probably symbolically also Liscow and Gottsched). The main title and the appendix 'Von dem Rechte der verdeckten Schreib-Art' (On the Right of Covered Writing) appears her in first edition, according to Meusel, the other nine pamphlets had already been published in 1733 and 1734. - Incorrect pagination: 227/8 and 491/2 assigned twice, pagination jumps from 507 to 518 and from 528 to 531. - Cover somewhat worn at joints, corners and edges, front fly-leaf with table of contents and notes in pencil. Book block trimmed in places to fit the binding, but always without loss of text. Overall, a clean copy of this rare and most curious item.
