Varia (mit diversen Schlagworten) – Erste deutsche Augabe der berühmten englischen Reitschule, mit neu gestochenen Kupfern. - Menessier de la Lance II, 250. - Lipperheide Tc 31, Fußnote. - Nissen, ZBI 852. - Graesse II, 93. - Der deutsch-französische Paralleltext zweispaltig gedruckt, das Titelblatt in Rot und Schwarz, zusätzlich mit zahlreichen ornamentalen Vignetten, Zierleisten und Initialen im Holzschnitt ausgestattet. - Die eindrucksvollen, überwiegend doppelblattgroßen Kupfer zeigen Abbildungen von Vorführ,- Reit- u. Dressurübungen, ein Gestüt, die Fohlenweide, Zaumzeug etc. - Die grossen allegorischen Kupfer stellen den Herzog von Newcastle dar, umgeben von ihn als Olympier preisenden Zentauren, knienden Pferden u. a. - Herzog William of Newcastle (1592-1676) war Feldherr und einer der bedeutendsten englischen Reitlehrer. - Es fehlen ein (v. 4) doppelblattgroßes gestochenes allegorisches Porträt ("Die Schlacht ist gewunnen") und das gedruckte Vortitelblatt. - Gestochener Doppeltitel an den Außenstegen fachkundig hinterlegt. Mehrere der doppelblattgroßen Stiche mit überstehenden Rändern eingebunden, andere vom Buchbinder eng beschnitten, deshalb mit Randläsuren bzw. mit (hinterlegten) Fehlstellen an den Rändern, mitunter mit Verlust der Rahmung. - Stellenweise leicht finger-, schmutz- und stockfleckig. Insgesamt solides Exemplar dieser außergewöhnlich prächtig illustrierten Reit- und Dressurschule.

Varia and Miscellaneous – Hippology. - With 89 (of 90) partly also etched engravings, of which 1 double-page emblematic title, 1 full-paged coat of arms, 3 (of 4) allegorical portraits and 77, of which 76 double-paged plates with often several figures each, as well as 8 schematic, mostly large-format illustrations in the text. - The German-French parallel text printed in two columns, the title page in red and black baroque letterpress, additionally decorated with numerous ornamental vignettes, head-pieces and initials in wood-cut. - The impressive, predominantly double-page-sized engravings show illustrations of demonstration, riding and dressage exercises, a stud farm, the foal pasture, bridles, etc. - The large allegorical engravings depict the Duke of Newcastle, surrounded by centaurs, kneeling horses, etc. praising him as an Olympian. - William, Duke of Newcastle (1592-1676) was a English field marshall and one of the most important riding instructors of his time. - One (v. 4) double-page engraved allegorical portrait ('Die Schlacht ist gewunnen') and the printed title page missing. - Engraved double-paged title skilfully backed on the outer margins. Several of the double-paged engravings bound in with overhanging margins, others closely trimmed by the binder, therefore with marginal tears or with (backed) losses in the margins, occasionally with loss of the printed frame. - Slight finger-stained, with soiling and foxing in places. Overall a solid copy of this exceptionally splendidly illustrated riding and dressage school.
