Er begann seine Karriere bei der Royal Navy mit 15 Jahren als Kapitäns-Kabinenjunge. Er stieg langsam in den Rängen auf und organisierte 1786 seine erste Pelzexpedition. Danach war er im Pelzhandel zwischen British Columbia und China involviert. Die Beschreibungen seiner Expeditionen lieferten wertvolle Informationen über die indigene Bevölkerung der nord-westlichen Küste Nordamerikas. - Tls. stärker stockfleckig und mit Tafelabklatsch. Ränder gebärunt. Insgesamt gut erhalten.

It was on these discoveries by Meares that the claims of Great Britain to Oregon mainly depended." - John Meares was a British captain and navigator. He began his career in the Royal Navy at the age of 15 as a captain's cabin boy. He slowly rose through the ranks and organized his first fur expedition in 1786. He subsequently became involved in the fur trade between British Columbia and China. The descriptions of his expeditions provided valuable information about the indigenous populations of the northwest coast of North America. Some parts are heavily foxed and have chalkboard marks. Edges browned. Overall, well preserved.
