Geography and Travel – South Sea. - With one chart as frontispiece and 36, where of 18 folding copper engraved plates, taken from the original French edition of 1716. - First English edition of Frézier's important voyage to the Pacific, postscripted by Edmond Halley, our copy with noble provenance containing the crest of the Dukes of Leeds. - "This work forms one of the most valuable of our early records of the Falkland Islands, and to Frezier we are indebted for the clearest contemporary account of the Navigation of the French seamen there ... To Frezier we are also indebted for the statement that 'these islands are certainly the same which Sir Richard Hawkins discovered in 1593', a statement often quoted later at the time of the English, French, and Spanish claims to the Falkland Islands. This English edition is preferable to the original French edition of 1716, as it contains Dr. Edmund Halley's postscript, correcting certain geographical errors made by Frezier. Halley is of course most famous now as the discoverer of Halley's Comet. At the end is a 13 pp. account of the Joint Settlement in Paraguay. The work also contains an interesting account of Guana at p. 147. - The folding plates mostly with maps and charts, the other plates with botanical motifs and of ethnological character. Some text illustrations with musical chords. - Provenance: 1) Engraved bookplate of the Dukes of Leeds on front paste-down. 2) Igor Nikolaievich Dolgorukij, with his lithographed book-plate on recto of front endpaper and blindstamp on title page. - Plates with incorrect numbering, but complete (no. XXX missing, no XXXVI doubled with no. 36), as stated in the pre-bound instructions to the bookbinder). - Book-block and plates in parts closely trimmed by the binder, plates XIV and XXV therefore with minor loss of text at margins. - Binding very slightly bumped at corners, title page and last 4 leaves with small faults skilfuly restored, last two leaves with annotations in pencil, altogether an highly collectible copy in an excellent artist's binding.
