Geographie und Reisen – Eines von 50 Exemplaren auf Velin "Jésus" der ersten französische Auswahlausgabe. - Vicaire III, Sp. 247. - Unbeschnittenes Exemplar auf Großpapier, meisterhaft gebunden vom Pariser "Prinz der Buchbinder" (Lesné) seiner Zeit, Jean-Georges Purgold. - Enthält den Frankreich betreffenden Teil aus "A Bibliographical, Antiquarian and Picturesque Tour in France and Germany", 1821 in 3 Bänden erschienen. - Der aus Darmstadt stammende Jean-Georges Purgold (1784-1829) gilt neben René Simier und Joseph Touvenin als einer der bedeutendsten franz. Buchbinder seiner Zeit. Schüler von Jean-Claude Bozerian betrieb Purgold seine eigene Pariser Werkstatt von 1810 bis 1829. U.a. beschäftigt er als Vergolder Antoine Bauzonnet. - Provenienz: Mit Wappen illustriertes Ex-Libris "Sylvain Van De Meyer" auf den Vorderspiegeln. Flieg. Vorsatz recto von Bd. 1 mit hs. bibliograph. Annotation (Aus Brunet). - Einband berieben und an den Ecken und Kanten geringfügig bestoßen, die Decken mitunter gering fleckig. Durchgehend stockfleckig.

Geography and Travel – One of 50 copies on wove paper 'Jésus' of the first French select edition. - Vicaire III, sp. 247 - Untrimmed copy on large paper, masterfully bound by the Parisian 'prince of bookbinders' (Lesné), Jean-Georges Purgold. - Contains the texts concerning France from 'A Bibliographical, Antiquarian and Picturesque Tour in France and Germany', published in 3 volumes in 1821. - Jean-Georges Purgold (1784-1829), a native of Darmstadt, is considered one of the most important French bookbinders of his time, alongside René Simier and Joseph Touvenin. A pupil of Jean-Claude Bozerian, Purgold ran his own workshop in Paris from 1810 to 1829, employing Antoine Bauzonnet as a gilder, among others. - Provenance: Ex-libris 'Sylvain Van De Meyer' illustrated with his coat of arms on the front paste-downs. - Front endpaper recto of vol. 1 with hand-written bibliographical annotation (extract from Brunet). - Binding occasionally worn and slightly bumped at corners and edges, boards minimally stained. Foxing throughout. Overall due to Purgold's splendid binding a highly collectible set.
