Geographie und Reisen – Erstdruck von Poggio Bracciolinis "De varietate fortunae", mit der Beschreibung von Niccolò de' Contis Orient-Reise (1414/39). - Graesse V, 382f. - ÖBL 1815-1950, Bd. 2 (Lfg. 6, 1957), S. 71 (Prov. Grolig). - Vermutlich 1447 fertiggestellt und Nikolaus V. gewidmet, dem letzten der sieben Päpste, denen Poggio während seiner langen Karriere als Sekretär diente, reflektiert der Florentiner Humanist in diesem Text kritisch das antike Rom (Buch I), die Schicksale verschiedener Fürsten als Beispiele für die "Wechselfälle des Schicksals" (Bücher II und III). - Schließlich gibt Poggio einen zeitgenössischen Bericht über die Reisen des venezianischen Kaufmanns und Forschungsreisenden Niccolò de' Conti (um 1359-1469) nach Syrien, Arabien und in den Indischen Ozean im Jahre 1414/39 (Buch IV, S. 126-152). Poggios handschriftlicher Bericht über de' Contis Reisen erlangte unmittelbare Bedeutung, da er zum ersten Mal detaillierte Informationen über Marco Polos Reise zu den Sunda-Inseln und den noch weiter entfernten Maluku-Inseln (oder "Gewürzinseln") enthielt. Auf der Weltkarte im Palazzo Pitti in Florenz (von 1447), die Poggio offensichtlich bekannt war, sowie auf der genuesischen Weltkarte von Fra Mauro (1459) sind Poggios Ausführungen zu Contis Berichten eingearbeitet. Gleichwohl bereits kurz nach dem Tod des Autors 1459 zahlreiche handschriftliche Versionen von Contis Reisebericht auf der Grundlage von Poggios Text zirkulierten, stellt die vorliegende Publikation von 1723 dessen erstes Erscheinen in Buchform dar. - Provenienz: Dr. Moritz Grolig (1873-1949), österreichischer Bibliothekar, Bibliograph und Buchhistoriker, mit dessen Bildexlibris auf dem vorderen Einbanddeckel, Monogrammstempel auf dem Titelblatt verso und am Ende der letzten Seite, sowie seinen persönlichen Anmerkungen mit schwarzer Tinte zum Erwerb und bibliographischer Natur auf dem Vortitelblatt recto. - Einband berieben, Vorsatzblatt mit Kleberesten, Paginierungsfehler 72/74, sonst gut erhaltenes Exemplar dieses für die Frühgeschichte der europäischen Entdeckungsreisen bedeutenden Buches.

Geography and Travel – With 1 large etched head-piece (coat of arms), numerous wood-cut head- and tail-peaces, culs-des-lamps and initials. - First printing of Poggio Bracciolini's 'De varietate fortunae', with a detailede description of Niccolò de' Conti's journey to the Orient (1414/39). - Presumably completed in 1447 and dedicated to Nicholas V, the last of the seven popes to whom Poggio served as secretary during his long career, the Florentine humanist here critically reflects on ancient Rome (Book I) and the fates of various princes as examples of the 'vicissitudes of fortune' (Books II and III). - Finally, Poggio gives a contemporary account of the travels of the Venetian merchant and explorer Niccolò de' Conti (c. 1359-1469) to Syria, Arabia and the Indian Ocean in 1414/39 (Book IV, pp. 126-152). Poggio's handwritten account of Conti's travels was of immediate importance, as it contained for the first time detailed information about Marco Polo's voyage to the Sunda Islands and the even more distant Maluku Islands (or "Spice Islands"). On the world map in the Palazzo Pitti in Florence (from 1447), which Poggio was obviously familiar with, as well as on the Genoese world map by Fra Mauro (1459), Poggio's comments on Conti's reports are incorporated. - Provenance: Dr Moritz Grolig (1873-1949), Austrian librarian, bibliographer and book historian, with his pictorial book-plate on front paste-down, monogram stamp on title page verso and last page, as well as his personal annotations in black ink regarding acquisition and of bibliographical nature on title page recto. - Cover slightly worn, endpapers with adhesive residue, pagination error 72/74, otherwise a well-preserved copy of this important book for the early history of European voyages to Asia.
