Mikroskopie

Technik – Martin, Mikroskopie 83 - Poggendorff I 1092. Insgesamt sehr gut erhalten.

Technique – Microscopy - With engraved frontispiece and 20 copper plates after Hertel. Contemporary half vellum with red edges (slightly bumped). - Important work on eyeglasses, telescopes, camera obscura, laterna magica, and microscopes. - Hertel's invention consisted of the introduction of the illumination mirror, "which combines the advantages of the vertical position of observation with transmitted light" (Darmstaedter 167). Hertel (1683-1743) was professor of mathematics at the Knight Academy in Liegnitz and correspondent of the Berlin Academy. The Halle-based Enlightenment philosopher Christian Wolff concludes his moving foreword with the words "Hertel (has) done a praiseworthy job in describing so clearly the art of glass grinding and assembling all kinds of useful instruments from the ground glass, and in revealing with such sincerity the tricks of the trade that experience has taught him... with such sincerity for the common good. And we owe him all the more gratitude because, until now, especially in our German language, we have had no book in which this noble art has been described so thoroughly and sincerely..." - Margins slightly browned. Overall in very good condition.
