Naturwissenschaften – Junk, Rara 77-78. - Nissen ZBI, 44 (die vorl. Ausgabe hat in Bd. II eine u. in Bd. V 2 Taf. mehr). - Woodward u. Sherborn, A Catalogue of British Fossil Vertebrata, S. XXV-XXIX.
Natural Sciences – 8 vols. With 397 handcoloured or tinted lithographic plates. First edition of Aggasiz' classical work about the fossil fishes, which shows impressive plates with specimens from museums and private collections. Aggaziz studied medicine and developed a strong interest in ichthyology and paleontology. After completing his doctoral thesis in Munich he was appointed Professor in Neuchâtel. There he published his monumental publication about the fossil fishes mostly on its own expense. This project brought him to his financial limits so that he had to sell his own paleontological collection to the local authorities. In 1847 he was appointed Professor of Geology and Zoology at Harvard University. - The impressive plates after drawings by Dinkel, Nicolet, Vogt and others are partly heightened with silver, bronze and gold to convey the appearance of the metallic sheen of scales that has been preserved in the fossil remain.
