Gelbe OBr. mit ornament. lithograph. Deckel- und Rückentit. (Rücken mit kleinen Fehlstellen und Rissen, mit kleinen Randläsuren, stellenw. angestaubt und leicht fleckig).

Naturwissenschaften – Umfangreiche wissenschaftliche Synopse über die Giftschlangen dieser Welt. - Adler IV, S. 49. - Alexander Alexandrowitsch Strauch (1832-93) gilt als der erste bedeutende russische Herpetologe. Als Direktor des Museums für Zoologie der Russ. Akad. d. Wiss. etablierte er St. Petersburg als internationales Zentrum herpetologischer Forschung. Die reichen Bestände des Museums dienten ihm zur Exemplifizierung seiner zwischen 1865 und 1890 erscheinenden Synopsen, wie der hier vorliegenden über Vipern. - Provenienz: Museum of Comparative Zoology, Cambridge (Mass.), mit zwei Ausscheidungsstempeln dieser Institution auf dem Vorderumschlag. - Umschlag an einigen Stellen hinterlegt, mitunter sehr leicht stockfleckig und wasserrandig, die unbeschnittenen Ränder angestaubt, sonst wohlerhaltenes Exemplar dieses selten angebotenen Titels, mit akkurat gestochenen Tafeln in kontrastreichen Grautönen.

Natural Sciences – Comprehensive scientific synopsis of the world's poisonous snakes, with 2 splendidly engraved large-format plates. - Alexander Alexandrovich Strauch (1832-93) is considered the first significant Russian herpetologist. As director of the Museum of Zoology of the Russian Academy of Sciences, he established St. Petersburg as an international centre for herpetological research. The museum's rich collections served as specimen for his synopses, published between 1865 and 1890, such as this one on vipers. - Provenance: Museum of Comparative Zoology, Cambridge (Mass.), with two ex-library stamps from this institution on the front cover. - Spine of cover with some faults and creases, wrappers with some enforcments, occasionally very slightly foxed and water-stained at margins, untrimmed edges dusty, otherwise a well-preserved copy of this rare item, with accurately engraved plates in contrasting shades of grey.
