Mit 184, teils zusätzlich radierten Kupfern auf 94 Tafeln, sowie gestochene(s) Frontispiz (französischer Titel), Titel- (Verlagsemblem nach Picard) und Schlussvignette. Amsterdam, Bernard, 1730. 2 Bl (Vortit., Tit.), 84 S. Gr.-Folio. Restaurierter Hln., die Decken mit Makulatur verschiedener Kamm-, Schnecken- u. Steinmarmorpapieren überzogen (Rücken erneuert, Innengelenke verstärkt, Reste entfernter Bezüge entlang der Außengelenke, stärker bestoßen und beschabt, leicht fleckig).

Ex.) - Pfeiffer A9. - Unser Exemplar wie zumeist mit unkolorierten Kupfern, aber mit dem oftmals fehlenden Frontispiz. Hier die Fassung mit niederländischem Text, gleichenjahrs bei Bernard auch auf Französisch erschienen. - Die Ausgabe wurde posthum von Merians Tochter Johanna Helena herausgegeben und umfasst das "Raupenbuch" sowie das "Neue Blumenbuch". - "Ihre (Merians) schon beim Raupenbuch erwiesene Meisterschaft, den Pflanzen und Tieren bei der Darstellung ihre Eigentümlichkeit zu erhalten, und sie trotzdem in eine wirksame Bildkomposition hineinzubauen, hat mit dem Surinam-Werk einen unvergleichlichen Höhepunkt erreicht." (Rückert, S. 46ff.) - Die Kupfer CLXX und CLXXII sind nicht auf den Tafeln abgedruckt, sondern bilden, wie stets in den vorliegenden Ausgaben, gemeinsam die Schlussvignette auf S. 84 (2 Blumen-Bouquettes durchbuchstabiert (a-h) bzw. -nummeriert (1-6), mit Verweis auf den Text) Bei Nissen so nicht erwähnt, weshalb dort die falsche Zählung zustande kommt. - Provenienz: Adam Samule Thebesius (1739-1808), deutscher Arzt und Publizist, mit dessen hs. Besitzervermerk auf Vortitel, zusätzl. daselbst gestempelt "A. De J. J. Merian.". - Vorsätze etwas stärker, vorderer Vorsatz mit Knickfalte, letzte Taf. verso stärker fleckig, mitunter leicht stock- und fingerfleckig und marginal mit alten Sporfleckchen, einige Bl. mit kleinen Ausrissen. Insgesamt ein sauberes, breit- und dreiseitig schöpfrandiges Exemplar mit kräftigen, konturierten Abdrucken der Stiche eines der wohl schönsten illustrierten naturwissenschaftlichen Bücher, die je geschaffen wurden.

Natural Sciences – Zoology. - First folio edition and first appearance of the full suite of Merian's plates of the European insects. - With 184 partly additionally etched copperplate engravings on 94 plates, as well as engraved frontispiece (French title), title (publisher's emblem after Picard) and final vignette. - Our copy, as usual, features uncolored engravings, but with the often missing frontispiece, and incorporates the version with Dutch text, also published in French by Bernard in the same year. - The edition was published posthumously by Merian's daughter, Johanna, and includes the "Raupenbuch" and the "Neue Blumenbuch". - "It (the book) is as remarkable for its botanical as for its entomological content: the insects are presented in different stages of metamorphosis on and around flowers. In addition some Surinam insects are figured as well, these deriving from drawings by Maria's daughter, Johanna." (De Belder). - The engravings CLXX and CLXXII are not included, but together form, as always in the present edition, the tail-piece on p. 84 (two flower bouquets spelled out (a-h) and numbered (1-6), with reference to the text). Not mentioned in this way by Nissen, which is why the numbering is incorrect there. - Provenance: Adam Samule Thebesius (1739-1808), German physician and publicist, with his handwritten owner's remark on the frontispiece, additionally stamped therein "A. De J. J. Merian." - Endpapers somewhat heavier foxed, front endpaper with crease, last plate verso with heavier staining, occasionally light foxing and finger-staining, some leaves with small tears. Overall, a clean copy with wide margins and three deckle-edges, the plates with bold, contoured impressions of the engravings, of probably one of the most beautifully illustrated scientific books ever created.
