Naturwissenschaften – Dritte, durchgehene und maßgeblich erweiterte Auflage des seltenen sowjetischen zoologischen Handbuchs. - N. A. Bobrinskij (1890-1964), ein bedeutender Vertreter der Moskauer Schule der Zoologie, begann seine wissenschaftliche Laufbahn an der Moskauer Universität und dem ihr unterstellten Darwin-Museum. Aus dieser Zeit stammt seine langjährige Freundschaft mit den Gründern des Museums, Aleksandra Koz und Nadeshda Ladygina. Auf der Flucht vor einer möglichen Verhaftung ging er in den 1920er Jahren nach Taschkent und kehrte Ende der 1930er Jahre nach Moskau zurück, wo er sich u.a. intensiv mit der Fauna Zentralasiens zu beschäftigen begann. Er leitete mehrere wissenschaftliche Expeditionen und veröffentlichte Leitfäden über die Jagd von Wildtieren sowie Monografien über Murmeltiere und Wildkatzen. Seine zoogeografischen Werke wurden mit Begeisterung gelesen und nachgedruckt. - Vorliegendes Buch beschreibt insgesamt 127 Arten von Wildtieren der UdSSR. Vorliegende dritte Auflage enthält dabei erstmals eine ausklappbare geomorphologische Karte der UdSSR. Ergänzt wurde diese durch aktualisierte Materialien über Murmeltiere und Erdhörnchen, eine größere Anzahl von Nagetieren und deutlich erweiterte Informationen über die geografische Verbreitung aller Arten. - Die meisten Illustrationen wurden aus früheren Ausgaben nachgedruckt und stammen von den sowjetischen Tiermalern Wassilij Watagin, Alexej Komarow und Alexander Formosow. Komarow, der heute eher für seine Gemälde, Skulpturen und Illustrationen in Kinderbüchern und -zeitschriften bekannt ist, schuf für diese Auflage überdies eine Reihe neuer Zeichnungen. - Titelbl. mit Besitzervermerk, teils papierbedingt gebräunt, sonst sehr gut erhaltenes Exemplar des Rarums.

Natural Sciences – Zoology. - Third, revised and significantly expanded edition of this rare Soviet zoological handbook, with 1 folding map and numerous text illustrations after drawings, bound in the original publisher's half cloth. - N. A. Bobrinsky (1890-1964), an important representative of the Moscow School of Zoology, began his scientific career at Moscow University and its affiliated Darwin Museum. It was during this time that he developed a long-standing friendship with the museum's founders, Aleksander Kots and Nadeshda Ladygina. Fleeing possible arrest, he moved to Tashkent in the 1920s and returned to Moscow in the late 1930s, where he began to study the fauna of Central Asia in depth. He led several scientific expeditions and published guides on hunting animals as well as monographs on marmots and wild cats. His zoogeographical works were read with enthusiasm and reprinted. - Present third edition of his handbook includes, for the first time, a folding geomorphological map of the USSR. Furthermore it has been supplemented with updated material on marmots and ground squirrels, a larger number of rodents and significantly expanded information on the geographical distribution of all species. Most of the illustrations have been reprinted from earlier editions and are by the Soviet animal painters Vasily Vatagin, Alexei Komarov and Alexander Formosov. Komarov, who is better known today for his paintings, sculptures and illustrations for children's books and magazines, also created a series of new drawings for this particular edition. - Title page with owner's note, partly time-stained due to the paper, otherwise a very well-preserved copy of this rare item.
