Band (v. 2) mit nobler Provenienz. - Poggendorff I, 943. - Ebert 8829. - Wallis 82.3. - Sotheran 1627: "Last and best edition, containing a description of the heliostat, the authors invention." - Die detailreichen Tafeln mit oft mehreren Darstellungen vor allem von optischen Experimenten in der Nachfolge Newtons. Das Titelblatt rot und schwarz gedruckt. - Der Verfasser Wilhelm Jacob Gravesande (1688-1742) war zunächst in Den Haag als Jurist tätig, bevor er eine Professur für Mathematik in Leiden annahm. Er gilt als der erste nichtenglische Anhänger der Newton'schen Lehren und war an deren Verbreitung stark beteiligt. - Provenienz: Grafen Harrach, österr. Uradel, mit goldgeprägten Supralibros unter Verwendung des Wappens derer von Harrach auf beiden Deckeln. - Einige wenige Seiten leicht stockfleckig, sonst sehr gut erhaltens Exemplar mit frischen Kupfern.

Natural Sciences – Third edition of Gravesande's main work, here the 2nd volume (of 2) with noble provenance. - 'Last and best edition, containing a description of the heliostat, the authors invention.' (Sotheran 1627). - The detailed plates, often with several illustrations, mainly of optical experiments following Newton. Title page printed in red and black. - Wilhelm Jacob Gravesande (1688-1742) initially worked as a lawyer in The Hague before taking up a professorship in mathematics in Leiden. He is regarded as the first non-English follower of Newton's theories and was heavily involved in their dissemination. - Provenance: Counts Harrach, Austrian aristocracy, with their gilt embossed supralibros using the coat of arms of the Harrach family on both covers. - A few pages slightly foxed, otherwise a well-preserved copy with fresh engravings.
