Es behandelt sowohl theoretische als auch praktische Aspekte von Licht, Farbe, Schatten, Optik und Bildprojektion. Kircher verbindet physikalische Phänomene wie Fluoreszenz, Phosphoreszenz, Reflexion, Brechung und Illusionen mit astronomischen Beobachtungen (Sonne, Mond, Planeten) und metaphysischen Betrachtungen, wobei Licht als göttliche Kraft dargestellt wird.Das Werk enthält Beschreibungen von technischen Instrumenten wie der Camera obscura, Spiegeln, Sonnenuhren und der sogenannten "Laterna magica" (Magische Laterne), einem frühen Projektionsgerät für Bilder. Kircher zeigt auch, wie Lichtstrahlen funktionieren und wie sie zur Messung von Zeit und Entfernung in der Astronomie genutzt werden können. First edition of Kircher's 'large-scale treatise on optical phenomena, fluorescence, colour and radiation theory, refraction, parabolic mirrors, astronomy, etc., including the earliest reference to the principle of a magic lantern' (Dünnhaupt). 'Ars magna lucis et umbrae' is a comprehensive treatise on light and shadow in ten books. It deals with both theoretical and practical aspects of light, colour, shadow, optics and image projection. Kircher combines physical phenomena such as fluorescence, phosphorescence, reflection, refraction and illusions with astronomical observations (sun, moon, planets) and metaphysical considerations, presenting light as a divine force. The work contains descriptions of technical instruments such as the camera obscura, mirrors, sundials and the so-called 'Laterna magica' (magic lantern), an early image projection device. Kircher also shows how light rays work and how they can be used to measure time and distance in astronomy. Embedded in philosophy and theology, the book reflects on the relationship between divine light, reason and human meaning. - Small paper defect at the bottom edge of page 837.
