Ein Teil des persönlichen und wissenschaftlichen Archivs mit Manuskriptmaterial, einigen Büchern, Sonderdrucken und anderen gedruckten Ephemera sowie eine vollständige Sammlung seiner topografischen Holz- und Papiermodelle, zwei davon mit ausklappbarem Mechanismus zur Visualisierung der Daten seiner Theorie über das spiralförmige Periodensystem der Elemente. (Newcastle upon Tyne, ca. 1940er-1950er Jahre).

Geologie

Naturwissenschaften – Tomkeieff (1892-1968) war ein russischer und britischer Geologe und Petrologe, der 1966 mit der Lyell-Medaille der Geologischen Gesellschaft ausgezeichnet wurde. Er wurde in Wilna geboren und studierte Petrologie am Petrograder Polytechnischen Institut. Er kam entweder während oder kurz nach dem 1. WK nach Großbritannien und begann 1920, am Anderson College in Newcastle-upon-Tyne Geologie zu unterrichten. Im Jahr 1948 wurde Tomkeieff zum Fellow der Royal Society of Edinburgh gewählt. 1957 wurde er Professor für Petrologie am Anderson College. Die Sammlung lässt sich grob in vier Teilen zusammenfassen: 1. Die vollständige Sammlung von acht Reliefmodellen (plus ein Duplikat und zwei weitere, die in den Beschreibungen nicht erwähnt werden) von topographischen Oberflächen, die über dem spiralförmigen Periodensystem der Elemente von Tomkeieff konstruiert wurden, und zwar in ihrer ersten, noch unveröffentlichten Form. Später wurden diese Modelle von der Crystal Structures Limited mit Sitz in Cambridge hergestellt. Zusammen mit maschinengeschriebenen Einzelblättern mit Beschreibungen der einzelnen Modelle, einem gedruckten Katalog des Herstellers und der dazugehörigen Korrespondenz zwischen Tomkeieff und Crystal Structures Limited. 2. Gedrucktes, maschinengeschriebenes und handschriftliches Material zu seiner bedeutenden Büchersammlung über die Geschichte der Geologie und seiner Sammlung russischer Literatur über Geologie und Petrologie. Dieser Teil enthält auch die Korrespondenz mit zahlreichen Universitätsbibliotheken, Antiquariaten und Verlagen bezüglich seiner Büchersammlung und der Veröffentlichung seiner eigenen Bücher. Mit dem gedruckten Kurztitelkatalog seiner Bibliothek mit zwei Memoiren, herausgegeben 1974 vom Käufer, der University of Sydney, (67 Seiten). 3. Manuskript und gedrucktes Material im Zusammenhang mit dieser wissenschaftlichen Arbeit, mit 3 seiner veröffentlichten Bücher, darunter sein "New Periodic table of the elements based on the structue of the atom", veröffentlicht 1954 mit zwei Entwürfen mit handschriftlichen Korrekturen und Ergänzungen. 4. Sein Arbeitsleben an der Universität von Newcastle mit 20 Fotografien (Porträts und Gruppenporträts).

Natural Sciences – Geology. - A part of the personal and scientific archive of manuscript material, a few books, off-prints, and other printed ephemera, and a complete collection of his topographic wood and paper models, two of them with fold-out mechanism to visualize data of his theory on the spiral-shaped periodic table of the elements. (Newcastle upon Tyne, c. 1940s-1950s). - Tomkeieff (1892-1968) was a Russian and British geologist and petrologist who won the Geological Society's Lyell Medal in 1966. He was born in Vilna and studied petrology in Petrograd Polytechnic Institute. He came to Britain either during or just after the First World War, and began lecturing in geology at Anderson College in Newcastle-upon-Tyne in 1920. In 1948 Tomkeieff was elected a fellow of the Royal Society of Edinburgh. In 1957 he became professor of petrology at the Anderson College. The collection could be roughly summed up in four parts: 1. The full complement of eight relief models (plus a duplicate and two others not mentioned in the descriptions) of topographical surfaces constructed over the spiral-shaped periodic table of the elements created by Tomkeieff, these being in their first, yet unpublished form. Later on these models had been manufactured by Crystal Structures Limited based in Cambridge. Together with typescript single sheets with descriptions of each model, a printed catalogue by the manufacturer, and related correspondence between Tomkeieff and Crystal Structures Limited. 2. Printed, typescript and manuscript material related to his important book collection on the history of geology and his collection of Russian literature on geology and petrology. This part also contains correspondence with numerous university libraries, antiquarian booksellers and publishers regarding his book collection and the publishing of his own books. With the printed short-title catalogue of his library with two memoirs of his life and work, published in 1974 by the buyer, the University of Sydney, (67 pages). 3. Manuscript and printed material related to this scientific work, with 3 of his published books, including his "New Periodic table of the elements based on the structue of the atom", published in 1954 with two proofs with manuscript corrections and additions. 4. His working life at the university of Newcastle including 20 photographs (portraits and group portraits).
