Naturwissenschaften – Erste Leidener Ausgabe von Galileis berühmter Verteidigung des Kopernikanischen Weltbildes. - Carter/Muir, S. 251f. - Vierte lateinische Ausgabe und fünfte Ausgabe überhaupt, hier gemeinsam gebunden mit der ersten lateinischen Ausgabe, der dritten überhaupt, von Galileis Werk über "Die zwei neuen Wissenschaften, die Mechanik und die Fallgesetze betreffend" - Zusätzlich zu Galileis Texten beinhaltet diese Ausgabe zwei weitere Verteidigungen des heliozentrischen Weltbildes: Keplers "Astronomia nova", mit dessen 10jähriger Beobachtung des Mars (Ss. 446-454), und P. A. Foscarinis Brief "circa Pythagoricorum, & Copernici opinionem de mobilitate terrae, et stabilitate solis ..." - "Der Dialogo ... ist eine meisterhafte Kampfschrift für die neue Wissenschaft. Er führt alle die großen Entdeckungen am Himmel vor, die die Alten nicht beachtet hatten. Er zieht mit bissiger Schmähung über die Steriliät, Halsstarrigkeit und Unwissenheit all derer her, die ihre Systeme verteidigen. Er schwelgt in der Einfachheit des kopernikanischen Denkens, und er lehrt vor allen Dingen, daß die Bewegung der Erde philosophisch, daß heißt hier physikalisch sinnvoll und einleuchtend ist." (Carter-Muir, S. 251f.) - Es fehlt das gestoch. Titelblatt. - Frontispiz durch Beschnitt mit minimalen Verlust im oberen Rand. Vorderspiegel mit Resten von Klebespuren. Beide vorderen Vorsätze recto mit verschiedenen, mit Bleistift vorgenommenen Besitzereinträgen und bibliogr. Angaben. S. 494 mit hs. Annontationen aus dem 18. Jh. in engl. Sprache. Mitunter ganz leicht stock- und fingerfleckig, papierbedingt etw. gebräunt.

A. Foscarini's letter "circa Pythagoricorum, & Copernici opinionem de mobilitate terrae, et stabilitate solis ..." - "The Dialogo ... is a masterful polemic for the new science. It presents all the great discoveries in the heavens that the ancients had ignored. It bitingly denounces the sterility, stubbornness, and ignorance of all those who defend their systems. It revels in the simplicity of Copernican thought, and above all, it teaches, that the movement of the earth is philosophically, that is to say, physically, meaningful and plausible." (Carter-Muir, p. 251f.) - The engraved title page is missing. - Frontispiece with minimal loss in the upper margin due to trimming. Front endpaper with traces of glue. Both front endpapers recto with various owner entries and bibliographical information written in pencil. P. 494 with handwritten annotations from the 18th century in English. Some very light foxing and finger-staining, slightly browned due to paper.
