Dunthorne 309. - Überaus prachtvolles Exemplar dieses Meisterwerkes der botanischen Buchkunst, welches durch seine hervorragende Kolorierung der Tafeln besticht. Neben den in Rot und Gold gehöhten Zwischentiteln ist auch das in Versalien gefasste erste Wort aller Titel der Tafeln je in Gold gehöht. Die wundervollen blattfüllenden Kupfer wurden von Johann Jacob Haid und Johann Elias Haid nach Zeichnungen von Georg Dionysius Ehret gestochen. Mit den Mezzotint-Porträts von J.J. Haid, Ehret und Trew. - Unser Exemplar enthält vor den 2 Bll. Anrede an den Leser in lat. Sprache zudem ein zweispaltiges Blatt mit deutsch-lateinischen Paralleltext welches im Druck unterzeichnet ist mit J.J. Haid, Augsburg 1750. Es folgt ein ebenfalls zweispaltiger "Index plantarum, quarum imagines pinxit D. Ehretus suntque Norimbergae in Museo D. D. Treu". - Teils mit Wasserzeichen mit bekröntem Lilienschild und Initialen J. H. & Z. (Jan Honig & Zoonen). - Die Plantae Selectae werden von Nissen als das bedeutendste jemals in Deutschland gedruckte botanische Werk angesehen. C. J. Trew, Arzt in Nürnberg und Hobby-Botaniker, bewunderte das Talent und die Fähigkeiten seines jüngeren Landsmanns Georg Ehret, eines Gärtners und Blumenmalers. Das vorliegende Werk ist die wichtigste Zusammenarbeit der beiden. Trew starb 1769 und konnte die letzten drei Teile daher nicht vollenden. Es übernahm fortan Benedict Christian Vogel, Professor für Botanik an der Universität Altdorf. - Ohne den sehr seltenen Nachtrag Vogels und sein Porträt (erschienen in zwei Decuriae 1790-1792). - Porträts und Text unscheinbar braunfleckig. Die Tafeln nur vereinzelt etwas (finger-)fleckig. Insgesamt überaus wohlerhaltenes Exemplar mit prachtvollem zeitgenössischen Kolorit der Tafeln.

Modern full morocco in the style of the time on 7 bands with gilt cover fillets, gilt spine label, rich spine gilding, standing edge fillets, gilt edges and marbled endpapers. - First edition. - Sumptuous copy of this masterpiece of botanical book art, which captivates with its outstanding colouring of the plates. In addition to the intertitles heightened in red and gold, the first word of all the titles of the plates is also heightened in gold. The marvellous plates were engraved by Johann Jacob Haid and Johann Elias Haid after drawings by Georg Dionysius Ehret. With the aquatint portraits of J.J. Haid, Ehret and Trew. - Our copy contains an often not called for two-column fol. with parallel text in German and Latin, signed in print J.J. Haid, Augsburg 1750, followed by an "Index plantarum, quarum imagines pinxit D. Ehretus suntque Norimbergae in Museo D. D. Treu", also in two columns. - Partly with watermark with crowned fleur-de-lis shield and initials J. H. & Z. (Jan Honig & Zoonen). - The Plantae Selectae are considered by Nissen to be the most important botanical work ever printed in Germany.C. J. Trew, a doctor in Nuremberg and amateur botanist, admired the talent and skills of his younger compatriot Georg Ehret, a gardener and flower painter. The present work is the most important collaboration between the two. Trew died in 1769 and was therefore unable to complete the last three parts. From then on, Benedict Christian Vogel, Professor of Botany at the University of Altdorf, took over. - Without Vogel's very rare addendum and his portrait (published in two Decuriae 1790-1792). - Portraits and text inconspicuously brownstained. The plates only sporadically somewhat (finger)stained. Overall an extremely well-preserved copy with splendid contemporary colouring of the plates.
