Lot 937 Charlie Chaplin. Hallo Europa! Leipzig, Paul …

Hallo Europa! Leipzig, Paul List Verlag, (1928). 8°. 247, (1) S. Mit Titelporträt (Frontispiz) und mehreren Tafeln mit Filmszenen-Fotografien. Orig.-Leinenband (etwas fleckig).

Modern Literature and Art – With frontispiece portrait and several plates of film-scene photographs. Original cloth binding (somewhat spotted). Hand-signed and inscribed by Charlie Chaplin, "best wishes," 1930. - German first edition of Charlie Chaplin's travel account "My Trip Abroad," in which the film comedian describes his triumphant European tour of 1921. The book appeared in the same year as the English original, published in 1928 by the Leipzig publisher Paul List Verlag, making it one of the earliest German-language publications about the silent-film star, who was already world-famous by that time. The edition opens with a biographical essay on Chaplin, written by Heinz Pol himself. Editing, translation, and adaptation were the work of the journalist and translator couple Charlotte and Heinz Pol: Heinz Pol (born Heinz Pollak, 1901-1972) was an editor and film critic for the renowned Vossische Zeitung, while his wife Charlotte (later known as a publicist under the name Charlotte Beradt) worked as a freelance journalist for, among others, Die Weltbühne, Die Dame, and Tempo. "Hallo Europa!" is considered one of their first joint literary translation projects.
